It used to be recommended that when stopping after using the engine hard that you did not switch off straight away but let the engine run to allow the turbo to cool down.

I'm told that this isn't necessary with the Freelander 2. Is this correct or do you still do it?

I used to have a Renault 5 Le car turbo, and was told that the reason for leaving it running was to ensure adequate lubrication. I beleive that this is not necessary on the Freel2, but i'm no expert Indus Silver

It best to take it easy for the last mile or so of a journey, do that and there is no need to sit in the car with the engine running when you arrive

I tend to leave the engine ticking over while I undo seat belt gather up my phone etc not much time really but a token gesture. At work

You really shouldn't be driving the car hard right up to your door step

In Norway it is ca. 10-18 mph (15-30 kmh) in housing areas - so no turbo problems here  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

I guess the issue is most likely to arise when stopping at a motorway service area.

Do we have a definitive answer on the need for a turbo cooling off period? I can see nothing in the handbook.

I used to have to wait ~ 30 secs on idle with a couple of old cars - Escort RS Turbo and Mitsubishi GTO TT, and the reason was lubrication starvation.

In fact after uprating the turbo's and winding up the boost on the GTO I fitted an aftermarket turbo timer which would take over when the ignition was cut, and idle the engine until the oil temp had dropped sufficiently, not unknown for it to sit growling for 3mins + after an enthusiastic drive

Lubrication, modern bearing design, and advances in materials means its pretty much obsolete practice. It does mean sticking to service and lubrication specifications however...!! 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. Mine and my dogs Storm and Sky

it says in tractor handbooks to tick over for a while before stopping the engine esp after hard work, also to always start the engine immediately if you stall.

different machine maybe but still an engine and turbo so wise to make an effort anyway At work

Yes but thats just to make sure there are no bits of cyclist or rambler stuck in the engine anywhere 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. Mine and my dogs Storm and Sky
