Did you feel any surge as the car lost power, I read that the real sign to look out for as it's the engines way of saying I'll run out if you don't do something now Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis |

I have been on zero miles at home at the bottom of a mile long 1 in 10 hill, had to go up in first cos of the loss of power thing, then coast for 3 miles to the petrol station before pulling out at 10 miles an hour on to a 70mph duel carriage way-phew thats hair raising

I tested mine in the Aussie outback near Alice Springs. When the gauge said empty, it was empty. I got the power cut off and all. I had a jerry can of diesel with me but I wanted to see if empty meant empty or whether I had another 100 km's left which is the case in some other cars.

Pretty sure the FL2 wont actually let you run completely out of fuel to the point it damages the system. I think it cuts the poer when you're really low then just before you actually run out, the car will cut out, albeit still with fuel in the pipes and fuel pumps so they don't die. 09MY FL2 Td4 XS, Style Pack, Privacy Glass, Martinique Blue.. oh so very blue.. |

It was 900 km's between garages so I knew I would probably have to use the jerry can. I thought, may as well see if the gauge is accurate...it was. Lost power right on cue at 0 km's and was 25km's short of Alice. Better than a Subaru Outback I had a few years ago. Ran dry with 75km's range still showing on the trip computer. A pity I was on the Nullabor Plain at 1am at the time....now that was fun. You can see the road trains coming for half an hour before they get to you. |

These trips you mention sound fantastic to me, would love to come to Oz and drive around, but the wife would want to fly between locations and miss the adventure

Mate, the 900km's were done at about 40km's an hour over corrugations a lot of the time, only slightly more fun than hitting your thumb with a hammer . But you are right, in general the trips are fantastic. Having said that, I have done 3 driving holidays of 10,000 kms each through the UK, Europe and Scandinavia and they were brilliant fun too. I'm jealous of how close in Oz terms that you guys are to some great places. Ditto on the US. |
