I would have agreed but I gave up manually calculating it when I found it was repeatedly accurate within 0.5mpg.


Same here Andy - as earlier mentioned I have also tried accurately calculating fuel consumption and comparing it with the computer reading. If you use common sense you will find there is very little (if any) difference. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Yes, the firmware is actually pretty clever.
Speaking of firmware, if anyone is getting disappointing economy they should speak to the dealer about ECU firmware updates. This can have an appreciable impact on economy. I'd like to know what version JP has that gives him 44.2mpg on motorways, that sounds like the version to have!

57 plate GS TD4 automatic owned for 11 months now with 16000 on the clock. I always fill and calculate the mpg.

After 7000 miles, of which 2000 have been dragging 1.5 tonnes along behind it, our average consumption is 26.73 mpg.

Our best mpg on a single fill has been 31.65 when we were holiday touring around North Norfolk (400 miles between fills of which 46 was towing). Our worst so far is 22.37 mpg when we towed 180 miles after local, short distance journeys Big Cry .

Compared to our last vehicle (Kia Sportage diesel auto) much the same mpg, but the FL2 is much more capable in performance so we're pleased. Naturally we'd like to get 31+ mpg on every fill Thumbs Up so will ask stealers to check for ecu firmware updates at the service.

I haven't noted the trip meter mpg reading for all fills (and I've had a few self/auto resets) but these are those I have taken vs the calculated mpg.... it isn't 100% reliably accurate in my experience, but pretty darned good nevertheless.

Calc mpg/Indicated: 28.46/27.2 22.73/22.9 28.33/27.5 26.55/26.5 29.00/28.0 31.65/30.2 26.37/26.3

I don’t know what ecu updates my car has?? But I really don’t drive my car hard I change gear at around about 2000 rpm very rarely rev the engine above 3000rpm, I find there is rarely any need too. I try to read the road ahead as best as possible.
I have managed to get a return of 550 miles to tank which was approx 39 mpg, 90% of this was motorway driving. (At legal speeds and not above) But on average I get 450 mile to the tank before refueling with a mixed type of driving. Smile

With an automatic I would expect to get approx 30% less than a manual fighting rush hour traffic 23ish mpg and approx 5% to 10% lower on a motorway driving 32ish mpg. And when towing a caravan who knows ??? 20 mpg to 25mpg on a good day.... 20 years ago my Dad used 26 gallons of fuel towing a caravan over 280 miles in an old 12 seater 6 pot petrol LR, just over 10 mpg Big Cry

With a car with X weight and X aerodynamics driven at a sent speed needs so much fuel to push it through the air.
A Bugatti Vernon (spelling ??) will do 253 mph and drinks fuel at a rate of 200 liters every 12 minutes (so I’m told) and the tires only last 1 hour, Drive it at normal motorway speeds and its better on fuel then a v8 super changed petrol Ranger Rover. It’s got much better Aerodynamics, There weigh about the same and there both 4 wheel drive. (Horse’s for courses)

I do think Land Rover are missing A trick with the new E drive fl2 to make it better on fuel ???? but it is very clever.

We get mpg talk ever time the price of fuel goes up I could drive a Ford or a Vw Estate car for my day to day driving and get 55 mpg plus ( but my FL2 puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. And I can play in the mud with it to.) I'm still a big kid . Sorry I do go on …..

JP. I know exactly what you mean.

( BTW - 35 - 37mpg _ 40/60_ mixed m.way/rural _ no urban) Last upgrade had no effect on consumption.

I was getting ~39-40 mpg on 80+ motorway + rural back roads (150 miles journeys) after 'chipping'.

My wife took over ownership last month and is getting ~36mpg on school run and local rural roads / tracks New: Freelander2 GS 62 plate (MY13) - Santorini Black with Clearview & Front PDC
Old: Freelander2 XS 09 Plate - Zermatt Silver with ST3 remap (eco map), Garmin 1490T Sat Nav, Rear Seat Entertainment kit

Sorry Dave for the misunderstanding, I should have said I refuel when the Low warning light came on. Not when I had ran out of fuel??
68 litres =14.95 Gallons which there must have been APPROX 35 miles of fuel left still in the tank when I did refuel after driving to the filling station with the low warning light on. So I stand on what I said 550 miles to when I needed to refuel is approx 39 mpg. There were still 3 or 4 litres of fuel in the tank. 68-4 = 64 = 14.07 Gallon’s?? Not 15 gallon’s. And in your gallery you show a range of 673 miles?? Don’t you believe me?
Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.

As you can see from my Gallery. (sorry I can’t get them to the forum page) I understand all about mpg and power to weight and aerodynamics from a past projected of 13 years ago of which I Designed and built with the Company worked for 11 year ago. 1748mpg was the best we got on the day but 1925 mpg was the best unofficial mpg we got.

That's pretty good going. Would you care to divulge your 'modifications'? I might be up for one of those.
Getting such good figures with high speed motorway miles is impressive. We all know we're not driving the most aerodynamically efficient design and that's what drains the tank (since drag is approximately proportional to speed squared).

No need to apologise JP, my mpg at the moment is averaging 34 at the mo but that was after a trip to France, I expect it to go down in a few days of local driving. That 673 range was after we filled up on the Isle of Sky and the computer was showing just over 40 mpg Thumbs Up It is possible to get good mpg but boy it ain't half boring driving at a slow speed Laughing ______________________

England 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Martinique Blue

Hi, have just returned from a 2 week, 3200 mile trip to southern Spain and got 37.3mpg. this included some offroad work up some pretty steep mountain tracks. The FL2 did not miss a beat all the way and was the most comfortable car I have driven for long distances.
Manual 6 speed using cruise control for much of the way - great Very Happy

And yes it is boring at time's (but it keeps my wife happy)
30 to 35mpg is about right for td manaul, 35 plus is a bonus, 40 mpg plus is a bigger bonus.

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

08 GS Auto 20,000 miles. have just covered a 980 mile trip to Southampton and back.
Results: First 30 miles hill road to A75, heavy traffic most of road to M74, M6 very heavy traffic, countless jams/stoppages for roadworks/lane closures, hardly worth using cruise. Heavy traffic all way south to desination.
Return on Monday only 1 stoppage (car on fire) drove at about 80 whole way on cruise 34.7mpg for total journey.

Next test is 180 miles of which 60+ will be in forrest.
