DPF - visit dealer?

I've done about 5000 km in the car since new. Yesterday, I got the warning message: "DPF full, visit dealer".

I have never seen the simpler message 'DPF full' for which the handbook advises to carry out the 'drive long and fast' procedure to burn it clean.

I'm therefore tempted to try this before I do go to the dealer. What do you think? Is it safe to try it, or should I heed the warnings of possible damage if I don't go straight to the dealer?

Regards

I got the same message after 6000 km, just followed the instructions and drove on special motor mode, 3500 revs and reduced power for 20 minutes. Stopped the car/engine and took a 5 minute break. Started again, and all ok ever since. This was over a year ago and I was a long way from a dealer, so I had no choice.

Same thing happend to mine last week. Phoned the dealer who requested the car at once. They did the normal cleaning DPF process but with a pc connected to monitor the procedure presumably. All was fixed and running perfectly within 2 hours of getting the message. I asked if there was something wrong and they said that they didnt find anything. My car is mainly used for long runs, and I never thought I would get the DPF FULL warning at all.

Point is - its better to be on the safe side when it says VISIT THE DEALER. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
Stornoway Grey with Ebony Black Pleather, Clear Indicators, Body Side Mouldings etc.

All ok now. I didn't drive it for a couple of days (though not because of this). When I started it again, message was just 'DPF full'. So I followed instructions and it worked. It seems you have to leave the car off and alone for a while before the message resets itself.
