Wheel Wobble

Had the LR2 for a month now and am sooo pleased. Had a return trip from Stroud to Cornwall at the weekend which is the first time I have done high speed touring. At about 80mph felt a distinctive wobble coming through steering wheel which would indicate poor wheel balance. Ordinarily I would take it to a tyre centre but a little preturbed as the car has only done 1200miles without any offroad malarky. This is my first 4x4 and don't know if this is a normal situation (wobble reduces as speed increases to about 90) for the big tyres.

Any advice or comments??

wheel weight fallen off? You should not get any wobbles no matter what size tyres

90 mph perhaps your private stretch of road is a little bumpy causing the wobbles Whistle At work

if the weight was thrown you might get a slight vibration as the wheel would be ballanced and you'll notice it more at speed

it's a long shot but have you checked the nuts on the wheels Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

A common reason for the wheels to go off-balance is dirt.
When you balance the wheels, normaly, for a good tire, the amount of weights added is below 100g.
Imagine that the same weight of dirt accumulated inside the alloys could throw the wheels out of balance.
I've observed that after some off-road on muddy roads, when returning to normal roads, a few minutes, until the dirt is expeled there is a slight wobble on steering wheel.

My FL2 has done 24k on the original Continentals (17") no vibrations of note across the normal speed range and it has been off road too. I agree with the others - look for missing weights first.

Good luck

Thanks for all your comments - Now there's a funny thing, checked all balance weights both inside and outside rims and they seem ok, the tyres are Goodyear Wranglers 17in. Anyway took the beastie for a spin down my private stretch of the M5 today and Censored me there was hardly any wobble/vibration across the whole speed range to 95mph. I do seem to pick up a lot of small stones pebbles in the treads which my wife has a great deal of trouble removing, I suspect this may have something to do with it (the stones not my wife).

Bertie my Jack is so pleased I bought the Wood Co armrest - he can now place his front paws on it and can see where we are going.

So far no niggles or other problems so fingers crossed.

Thanks again
