New front and rear brake pads

Hi,

I need new front and rear brake pads for an '07 diesel FL2. I have looked into supplying these myself and asking a local garage to fit them for me. Should I be getting genuine parts or something else and does anyone have any recommendations on where to get them?

My local dealer wants over £320 to supply and fit front and rear pads and over £660 if I need new discs as well (which may be possible) !!

Has anyone else tried to do this by supplying the parts themselves?

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers,

to keep your warranty get OEM parts, and from what i paid to have mine done, there price is very similar.

Who is saying you need new break pads? if its dealer, then they have been known to exgagerate the required change.

To save money i would seek a local independant and supply them with the OEM pads to fit

You could get your pads via Nick Lee @ Yeovil LR (forum sponsor, known as the large one) and tell him about the forum Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I agree, buy OEM quality and get independant to fit, but warranty?

Never known brake pads or discs to ever be a warranty'd item, love to see you get that one past a stealers of any brand, never mind our wonderful LR ones.... 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. Mine and my dogs Storm and Sky

Thanks guys,

getting a local dealer to fit new front and rear pads tomorrow - should save over £100. Doesn't affect the warranty if higher grade components are used and they are non warranty covered items.

Cheers for the advice.

I would be careful not using OEM parts even if those parts (ie the pads) themselves aren't covered

LR will use what ever means to prevent paying out even if it's a small thing

LR stance will be the OEM parts are the best for the car and therefore you will not get better parts

my stance is don't give them the get out by using non oem, just get somebody cheaper to fit oem parts for you

I agree with NP, don't do anything that would give them any opportunity to wriggle out of a claim Thumbs Up or you might find they put far more effort into declining a claim than fixing a problem. Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

Was checking the front brakes on my daughters Fiesta this morning, and while I was in the mood thought I would have the wheels off the Freelander and have a look.
Its done 27000 miles now and the fronts were still in quite good condition, I reckon they have at least another 10k in them.
The rears were a different story. They should last until its next service in January when it will have done about 30k but that would be about it, so I think I will get a set soon and whip them in before it gets too cold to be crawling around.
I thought that most of the braking force went to the front, and while the rear pads are smaller, am surprised they havent lasted so long.

Had all wheels off today when fitting spare set and looked at pads, fronts not yet 1/2 worn, rears more than 1/2. Pleased to see discs in perfect condition as many vehicles fitted with rear discs have problems with excess wear and corrosion. This is caused by brake compensator greatly reducing effort to rear wheels unless car is laden thus discs corrode and in turn increase pad wear. FL2 does not have this problem as it is heavy enough over rear axle. My previuos Honda CRV 2007 had new discs at 9,000mls and were again showing signs of corrosion at 17,000 when I got rid of Censored heap. Cheaper to change a set of pads at 30k than have corroded discs (pads not worn but not serviceable) at 20K

2008 GS Auto 21,000 miles, The original GS wheels on G/Year Wrangler are at 3mm after 21k, my SE wheels(courtesy of Ebay) are Continental Contact which I bought with 7mm. Used SE wheels for 1000 mile motorway trip but refitted GS today as I will be covering 60+ forrest miles nnext weekend.

£320 to supply and fit Shocked......... Censored I think I would have a fit at that price.

I had rear OEM rear pads fitted at the local Kwik-fit centre. £86 fitted, from memory front pads are a similar price.

Sounds like your dealer is ripping you off big time Evil or Very Mad ______________________

I have replaced both front and back myself. Very straightforward to do, assuming you have some experience changing pads. Greg East
