Clutch problem

Had a strange problem with the clutch today. Pushed the pedal down ...and it didn't come back up, until I pulled it back up by hand. I tried a few more times and it was the same. After several repetitions it became clear the the pedal would return on its own but only after at least five seconds.

Made this discovery at 5.30 this morning as I was about to set off on 180 mile trip to a meeting. Not much chance of LR Assist responding at that time so had to use my imagination. A rope around the clutch pedal provided the solution allowing me to 'help' the clutch to engage by hand, it was actually quite easy to manage. About 100 miles into the trip the clutch decided to behave properly and had done for the rest of the day.

I have previously reported some odd 'feeling' in the clutch pedal along with some obvious 'knocking' that can be felt through the pedal, not surprisingly the dealer response was no fault found, may be this time if the problem develops further they'll believe me. Stornoway Grey GS ... I dont know if my problem is in any way related, when changing up to third gear or down from fourth to third, I feel a shudder through the clutch pedal. It is sometimes worse than others but nearly always present. It feels like a clutch shudder but if so, why only third gear?

Have you checked your hydraulic fluid level?

Yep, its fine. Clutch is operating correctly in as much as engaging - disengaging is concerned its just the the pedal wont return, I have a feeling it is something to do with the pedal mechanism/linkages causing some sort of resistance... watch this space. Stornoway Grey GS ... At my works place we run a few Renault Master vans and they suffer with the same problem, on them it is the clutch fork sticking. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I've just had a thought, Shocked

It's only a few weeks since the gearbox was split from the engine to allow for replacement of the flywheel/crankshft oil seal .... hmmmmm wonder if that has anything to do with it? Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

Problem has settled down now, clutch pedal feels very odd, its is very slow to return but has stopped jamming in the down position (so don't need the retrieve cable any more!). Pedal takes about two seconds to return if pressed fully down. Its a pain but as long as it doesn't get any worse, it's only got to last two more weeks then it wont be my problem.

Sorry I know this isn't the correct way to deal with the problem but if my dealer wasn't such a PITFA I might do things differently.

Pity the next owner .... Whistle Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!
