Have I found the cause of my rough running ?

Well, after replacing stuff, changing fuel etc, things seemed ok. Then the "bogging down" under acceleration seemed to return.
So I decided to pull plugs today and check the condition of the pins - just incase. Unfortunately I found this Shocked

I then checked the other surrounding wires and noticed this top one, all cracked :

Which then lead to this when I touched it :

The black conduit has started disintegrating. Underneath I found the wiring doing the same. It literally crumbles when touched.
I believe the wires were in constant contact with the cylinder head and the heat has damaged the insulation on the wires. None of the other wires were in direct contact with the cylinder head, which is why I assume they are undamaged. The damage being only at the point of contact.
Have I found the reason for my rough acceleration ?
What's more, could I just temporarily isolate and re-insulate them with electrical tape until I can get it booked in at my mechanics ?

Your wiring harness is in very bad shape.

If you wrap the conductors individually in electrical tape you should be fine short term.

A FIELD EXPEDIENT REPAIR

The wire that you showed in the first picture is for the fuel injector

Good luck

Let us know how it gets fixed

Thanks

Paul

I would say it’s a definite possibility and yes wrap them well with insulation tape until you can replace the,. Good luck.

Very alarming indeed.

Your wiring and/or connectors need replacing as soon as possible.
In the meantime you need to separate out and insulate each wire individually, as it could be extremely hard to find a fault caused by to (random) wires touching together, if you just insulate a bundle of wires.

Thanks for the info about your 2007 FL2, poor wiring could be the answer to some of the apparent sensor problems that have been sent to the forum lately. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Thankyou all for the replies.

I've done a temporary repair by removing the wire insulation on all affected wires right back until it was sound. Then I wrapped the wires in self fusing rubber tape (in the case of the injector wires, individually) before wrapping them again and covering them with silicone hose I had left from another project.
There was also another injector wire (right of the pic) that , although sound, has lost it's conduit too, so I've put silicone hose around this as a precaution.

Hopefully this will be enough until I can get it booked in.
Again, many thanks. Thumbs Up

On a side note: I keep my engine bay clean, but haven't touched it since last Autumn. I can't believe how filthy it looks !

My Daughter brought the LR2 home today and I took a look at the wiring.

Nothing worn as far as I can tell.

Some pictures

Thanks for sharing this information

Definitely worth a check

Take care

Paul

You are correct we are discussing the 3.2

But the failure of the insulation for the wiring should also affect the Oil Burners

We will just have to wait and see

For now you are in a good place, but don’t get too comfortable, you never know when the conditions will change.

Take care

Paul

Well things have gone from bad to worse Big Cry
I decided to call out Green Flag ( well I'm paying for the bloody privilege of being recovered !) but they sent the guy from the local garage a mile away from my house, who, after turning up just wanted me to turn the engine on and sniff the exhaust fumes. From that he deduced that there could be x, y, and z wrong with it, but settled on oil getting past the piston rings, despite no oil loss, no warnings on the dash etc. He said he could smell petrol, oil and a mystery smell that he couldn't quite put his finger on, but kept going on about it. He then stuck his finger up the exhaust and coated 3 with what was coming out, rubbing it between his fingers and touching it on his tongue. He decided a compression test was needed, but didn't have the equipment with him, he was late for another job (read Mosque), so he would arrange to get my Freelander picked up the next day and taken to my preferred garage stating Green Flag would contact the garage to let them know they would be dropping off before picking it up from me. So today despite being told they would pick up at 12, they text saying they would be late, giving me another time slot of 2pm,then at 2pm saying it would be 3pm,then at 3pm saying it was 3.15, then 3.30 and finally I had a message saying "The technician has arrived" ! Eventually at 4pm a guy who looked about 15 turned up, loaded up my Freelander then asked if I could let my garage know he was going to be dropping it off, because if they refused , he would drop it back to me and I would be charged !
I had to quickly phone my preferred garage who said they had no idea the Freelander was coming as Green Flag hadn't called them and they really didn't have the room and had stopped taking bookings until after Easter because they were snowed under. They did , however, agree to take the Freelander as a "good will " gesture. I explained the symptoms to him and told him what i hadn't told the break down company - that I had had 2 different diagnostic machines plugged in and both came back with an open circuit on no.3 injector and a VVT fault. To which he replied that "that sounds more likely than piston rings".
However, I'm now at the end of a long queue. Could be weeks before it even gets looked at. But at least it's in safe hands at Marrion 4x4.

My Sympathies

I would find Green Flags CEO's email address and send him a copy of your Forum Posting. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
