Fuel filter priming

having just changed the fuel filter and as we all know you need to prime it before trying to start the car i was thinking what i could use to do the deed.
Salvation came in the shape of one of those cheap electric pumps that you use to change your oil via the dipstick tube, a quick sorting of tubing, connections to the battery and a flick of the switch it was job done Very Happy

pump was brought from Amazon in my case but i'm sure you'll find them all over the net

I use one of these pushed onto the return-to-tank port of the filter and slowly draw fuel through until you see no air bubbles in the clear tubing. Smile

was looking for something similar, but everywhere that was open on Sunday afternoon said "oh we can order it for next week" which is not a lot of use when you have an empty filter Laughing

the only issue with the electric pump is it maybe a bit too rapid with diesel as it's not as thick as old engine oil Laughing

I bought a bucket and filled up a diesel fuel jerry can(5 ltr), then when I was ready for the filter to be put on.I immersed the fuel filter until no more bubbles came out then lifted the filter out of the bucket, carefully wiped the outside of excess fuel then installed it with minimal drops.
When everything was connected back up it started straight up.
I had read that this was one of the ways to get fuel into the filter after changing the filter.

I bought a manual vacuum oil extractor from Clarke's ( machine mart ) to extract the oil from boats via the dipstick. It holds about 2l of oil when full. I have successfully used it for priming fuel filters, extracting the oil in the PTU and diff, brakes etc. Was only about a tenner.
I bought a 12v extractor from Lidl a couple of years ago, but the pump soon failed.

this is what we allways do 100% works every time, unlike priming pumps.

I just use the standard rubber bulb pump as described in the JLR manual - works for me , with minimal mess. Jules
