I’m now waiting for the garage to fit a new coil spring front passenger side.
Whilst I’m glad it’s been spotted and being sorted I’m annoyed that the 76k vehicle has had a snapped spring when the previous TD4 was at 130k when it snapped on the driveway during Covid when I moved it to let my wife get to the doctors.
Are freelancers prone to snapping their coil springs?

I dont think there is a known spring issue - probably depends upon the sort of work they've had to do. Jules

Well Jules both vehicles have been used extensively for road and motorway use no towing or off road work

Time will tell if the right spring goes too!

I wouldn't recommend just replacing one spring. Good practice is to replace in pairs as the compression of the new spring will be different to the existing old one. This will effect the handling of the car. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

Fully agree and on the last TD4 they were done as a pair.
In this case I’ll see if the other side goes and look to Chang it at the next service in December

My near side front spring broke last week, just 3 miles after passing its MOT. I was reversing out of my garage when there was an almighty bang. They certainly let you know when they break.
Car is a TD4 2010 with 116k miles on the clock. Garage that fixed it showed me the broken part. It had a small rusty nick at the point of fracture and the rest was crystalline metal.

That sounds very much like the previous TD5 xs I had that let go reversing it on my driveway very loudly at 1134k again no hint of major corrosion just a small nick at the top of the break!!

This happened to me yesterday just as i was driving onto our drive, there is a little hump to get on the drive and twang clonk just as though a spanner had dropped onto the under tray, so car up on the ramps to investigate.

It didn't take me long to find this below on the lower arm.

TD4 MY07 125,000 miles so not bad really it's a known fact that between November to middle of March there is more chance of your springs breaking because of the cold weather, the FL as been down a few pot holed country lanes in the last three months while going to my friends home to sort out his Freelander one, so maybe that as put extra pressure on the old springs.

Looks like it had an air line crack because the break is clean, anyways i think i may have found a good decent second hand strut shocker spring all in one which i put on until the weather gets better and warmer then change the both together.

The jobs are building up come early summer late spring, four new Calipers, discs and pads, timing belt and water pump last done in 2017 = 25,000 miles so doing because of year only not by mileage, all parts waiting for the right time.

I think if a spring would break, it would happen here. There must have been a fault in your spring. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Well i spent at least 3 hours today wire wheeling the threads, and using penetrating fluid then using a hugger gun on the strut bolt never even budged all the others that might need removing i got started and nipped them back up.

I will give it another try tomorrow and apply some heat and a long bar fingers crossed i can get it to move.

Get a can of freeze spray, heat the nut & cool the bolt. It might give a bit more thermal expansion difference to break the joint a whisker more. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Because the bolt spans an air gap you can get corrosion along the whole length of the bolt.
I found a long bar - lots of penetrating oil and little turns back and forth eventually got them out. I also tried to derust the part of the bolt visible in the air gap.

PS you dont need a special tool to spread the strut - I just put the bolt in from the wrong side (having cleaned the thread with a tap and inserted a piece of metal plate into the gap for the bolt to push the strut apart. Jules
