United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Sumatra Black
7 1/2 years on... :)

A few will remember me and many will not...
I first bought my car in jan 08 from new...In that time i have done 42,000 miles and it has had the following problems...
The glove box latch failed and cost me Ł12 to fix..
Rear tailgate lock failed..Ł220 to fix..
And that is it apart from the usual brake pads and tyres...
Services have been done by my friend who owns a garage for Ł40 parts supplied by me(all original parts)
So I have had an amazing seven years hassle free driving..And a great deal of that has been done off road on farms tracks and fields.
I have thought of replacing it but with relatively low mileage and few problems..The question i ask is why do i need to.
I forgot to add..The aircon gas replaced and fixed the grinding noise.

It is a manual and that is maybe the only thing i would of changed if i had to make the decision again..It has been a real pleasure to own and i have kept it in good condition with it getting detailed by me as soon as the winter season is over. Long may it continue.. Smile

Does this add weight to my theory that the earlier FL2s were somehow better built? Our 2008 model was the only one that was relatively fault free, same goes for lady down the road and my brother in law, both trouble free on a 59 plates. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

My last one never had a thing go wrong with it, it was faultless until 51000, then everything started going wrong on a regular basis. between 51000 and 62000 it cost Ł4000 in repairs then I sold it.

I still love them so I bought another, hasnt put me off, and as long as I change it again before 50000 I should be ok Thumbs Up

That's hardly a good endorsement for a car is it? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Update..Still have the car..17 years later..Been a fantastic car and I reckon I have spent less that a grand in parts over the years apart form the usual brake disks and pads and stuff..Sills have rotted now..So it maybe in its final year.

It's been a great car for you then.
Not many owners keep them that long.
What will you change to if the rusty sills condem it? Or you could get the sills welded and keep on driving it? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

@:Geoffk Glad to hear its served you well.

I note that, according to an MOT check, my old TD5 Disco is still going (somewhere) after 25 years with 213K miles.

I waxoyled the chassis and under body myself and I can see that only recently has bodywork corrosion been an issue.

I'd love to know where it is and whats its doing - it was such a useful and versatile car - I really miss it some days.

In today’s world of leasing and renting cars I wonder how many people would own a car that long now.

My 2012 SD4 auto has done just over 50k miles and the only problem has been with the Haldex and that is because Land Rover says it does not need servicing. Well it does, and the service cured the problem but it did not cure the problem with Land Rover saying that the Haldex needs no servicing.

@: Geoffk : you have a great car there……! Such low mileage…..& so few faults……I thought my wife’s Mini was good…….
Bought new in 2007……replacing FL 1 1.8p 3 door……I hated it….seat position too high & got ripped off by dealer…..just out of warranty …..engine o/heated….the Mini has done 40k mls only…..new tyres, front brakes ,new battery in 2022 & seat sensor…….only repairs necessary.

Further to your post Jules : I checked my old D2TD5 MOT……: scrapped since 2015 ….I sold (gave away )
Disco in 2014. Had from new, one of 1st D2 TD5 HSE ……manual……used every day ….100ml/day commute……TD5 5 cylinder made à lovely sound…..turbo whistle…….did head gasket at 180k…..& a few fuel pressure control valves…..otherwise no engine problems….in 470k mls……except occasional o/heating…
…..after 350k MLS. Used to pull-over & release pressure ( with care)……top-up & away ….ok for months.
Wife used to panic…..especially if we were in France…..also thé sunroof would leak on occasion.
So we bought the FL 2…….I used the D2 in the week…kept the FL for pleasure……until 2014 when I realized I preferred the FL………..so I advertised thé Disco…..no one wanted it although it was mint…turbo as new….no wear ….gearbox / transmission like new………just too many miles on clock.
It is strange that often the earlier cars in à series seem made better……..à friend had a D2 TD5 same spec as mine but 2003…….later spec engine….was nowhere near as nice…….sound or drive…..
Forgot to mention : I Waxoyled thé Disco when new but it still rotted at rear…..from the inside….think it was rusty on assembly……..I remember the chassis makers bent bust early 2000’s.
Will keep FL while it’s still running great…..due 160k service shortly…. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current
D2 TD5 HSE Man MY 1999 470kmls….gone 2014 ….lovely engine..chassis rotten
D1 300TDI Man MY 1996 56kmls….gone 1999…D2 much better
Wife’s FL1 1.8P MY 2001 32kmls …gone 2007…has Mini since.

I'll also endorse the early Freelander 2, brought mine just under 8 years back and the
only major issues have been, Throttle body control thingy wotsit, (stripped gears)
offside rear wheel arch (under the passenger door) rear suspension N/S (pot hole)
and of course the consumables. driven her all around the UK, off roaded and towed (works trailer) with her. Thumbs Up DAVE.
