Winter battery blues

After the tell tale Hdc fault message each time it was started the battery decided to die gloriously yesterday.
New battery is on route Exide so just given it a real long run to bring the car up to full charge

The AA chap who got us running again today said it was only half dead and no accepting charge but immaterial as the new one is on route.
Too many short trips by my good lady taking out more than was going back in plus minus four during the day a lower at night.
True battery killer weather.

Ive been out trickle charging both our cars recently - its amaziing how much a couple of short trips drains the batteries with no time to recharge fully. Jules

with the new battery on order now delivering end of today we employed the help of our AA man who tested the battery and charging system. he noted the battery was abou half depleted from too many short trips but the alternator was charging a battery reluctant to accept any charge ,hence our issue.convinced the misses to take it out for s long hour long run so hopefull it will start next time or i will have to jump start it wi the new battery until it can be swapped out. these things always happen in bad weather conditions.

it will be swapped out when the weather permits and i can get help with only one hand/arm,
gone the days when this sort of job was easy as it was on the previous fREELANDER 2.

Still undeterred i will get it sorted wi th an assist from one of my sons, hopefully.

My battery did the same thing on Christmas Eve, so a trip to Halfords where they fitted a new Yuasa battery in 15 minutes and I didn't even get my hands dirty. Well worth the extra cost for fitting and disposal.

fitting batteries is good money, they get paid to fit them and then get £8 or so for the old one,

Some folks have and too much money! Use a pair of disposable gloves so you don't get your hands dirty ......... and use the 8 + 15 for something more useful ...... like a set of replacement wiper blades ...... then save another £8 and fit them yourself 😂😂😂😂😂.

I don’t think it’s having plenty of money, some of us know our limits, like putting water in the washer bottle and washing the car.

“Mechanical knowledge has been part of the driving test for quite a while now”

Has the failure rate gone up? Serious question, as most youngsters don’t have a clue about vehicle maintenance/operation in my experience. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Is changing a battery part of the test now ? I don’t think changing the clutch on the side of the road like they could with an old Vauxhall cavalier is on now days.

As you live close sounds like a good plan, for me I’d be spending over 2hrs on a round trip so not worth it for me .. horses for courses

I would put basic safety checks under common sense, not mechanical knowledge
