2012 SD4, issue with humming/ rumbling type noise when stationary and still in drive eg, at traffic lights for example, put it in neutral and noise stops. Drive off and all is well. Have also noticed same noise when turning on main switch to clear windscreen. TIA

OK, I had a similar issue with a 2011 SD4 - made an awful metallic rumbling / grating noise when crawling in slow traffic, pulling up at lights etc. Shoving the car into neutral cleared the problem. Turned out to be very simple - there is a small metal shield fitted to underside of the catalytic converter, held on with a couple of torx screws. I can't find the plate on the landrover exhaust parts diagrams, so I can't be more specific.

One Torx screw had corroded away completely, the other was bent & loose (see image below). The result was that the shield / plate resonated perfectly at exactly 975 rpm - so if you slowed down at exactly the right rate it would start resonating and keep vibrating until pulled away again, or shoving the vehicle into neutral, which allowed the revs to drop. Fixed with a couple of 10mm bolts (second picture).
Your issue might be completely different - but it taught me a valuable lesson, i.e. don't rule anything out on a Freelander...

Had a rattling exhaust heat shield, above the rear silencer box, same story, a couple of the mounting points had broken.
