Is it possible to play the radio etc without it switching off after a couple of minutes? With all our previous Jags and Landrovers I could have the CD/radio or tape running while working on the car or roundabout it. It is annoying that neither the Freelander or E pace can play longer than a couple of minutes without switching off

No, modern in car entertainment systems use so much power that the cars other systems may not operate when you come to want them if you sit there listening to the radio, so the cars other systems shut it down after about 15 minutes.

For me that was the first indication that I needed a new battery.

That kinda proves that modern cars are badly thought out and built terrible ,always give daft problems for the main dealers to try to sort. Tractors have masses more tech than modern cars, can link to electronics that implements need to use . Work in harsh environments day in and day out and keep starting up without daft messages on screen intimating the driver has problems Laughing

But modern tractors probably have huge capacity batteries and over capacity alternators. A modern car with the entertainment system on is going to flatten the battery completely in 10 hours. That is going to take the available power for all the engine equipment below the levels it needs to have to run the various environmental sensors that are now needed out of range very quickly. You need over 12.5 v annd a good current level. Ever tried running a computer with an under sized power supply? That is what the time out on the entertainment system is saving you from.
Modern cars are not badly thought out, they are strangled by the manufacturers need to make money while complying with ever tighter environmental regulation.
