7 years, cost £15,700+

I have had my Freelander for 7 years this month.
I bought it from, Marshalls Bedford, so obviously paid full retail price. Working over 7 years for £11.500 depreciation it was I think worth the extra for peace of mind and a years guarantee.
Service, MOT & parts cost £3,448 plus an additional £700 for, tyres, battery, air con. service and 1 windscreen. Tyres have done 35000 miles and will need replacing soon.
Major failures have been, Haldex, Bell Engineering £549. ERG £500.
Probably spent a couple of hundred £s on paint to refurbish wheels and Grill and other sundry items.
I have not counted, Fuel, road tax or insurance.
Going forward I can not find anything to replace the Freelander. I don't like the, Disco Sport and I cant afford a Range Rover.
Sum up, depreciation is still your biggest cost, but will soon be into zero depreciation, then hopefully appreciation.

My 2014 Metro at 7years Ownership

Thanks OLOSTEVE very interesting.

Your post had me searching through my service records.

My car came from Marshals Cambridge at 3 years old 16000 miles for £22750 Gross (my previous 2010 SD4 XS 91k miles was p/ex at £7750) therefore Net £15000.

According to Autotrader my present value is £8799 P/ex or £10670 Private Sale.

My car came with 2yrs LR Warranty and Recovery and I extended it for a further 5 years at a total cost of about £5000. I have had the Recovery (AA) out about 5 times, have had several Dealer diagnostic visits, a new Differential, and a Turbo reset/exercise. It also has included some 4-5 weeks, in total, of Courtesy/Hire Car while my own Metro as been serviced or otherwise off the road.

My Main Dealer Servicing came to about £3000 altogether including Service parts and MOTs.

About £1000 has been spent on Tyres.

I love the driving position, and have yet to find a car that betters this, and the ease I can cover the miles in the convenience and confidence my FL2 gives.
The Extended LR Warranty has not been too expensive for the security it has given my wife and myself (two old codgers)

Therefore I too regard the my Metro to be a great economic buy. --- (Touch Wood?) --- FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Most important point, Ian, has made is about driving position and why the Freelander is almost unique.
This is one of the reasons I do not like the, Disco Sport, you get the impassion that you sit a lot lower in the car and most manufactures have you sitting very low with an enormous amount of head room.

I seem to remember reading somewhere years ago about buying a new car, and keeping it for 13 to 15 years and that’s the break even point. With the depreciation etc costs etc it was the most economical way to own a car.

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Firenze Red

I purchased our SD4 SE Tech at 6 months old, in Feb 2015, £27695

Since then (excluding VED and Insurance and fuel) it has cost £5221.96

That includes:
2x set of tyres
2x battery
new Haldex pump (Bell Engineering)
front brakes disks & pads x1 (upgrade to 316mm disks & caliper carrier) + mudshields
rear disks & pads x2 + mudshields
braided brake hoses
replacement brake pipes x2
HID headlight upgrade
Cambelt + FEAD belt + all pulleys
AC compressor
Rear strut x2
EGR valve + airpath calibration
drivers door latch
tailgate microswitch
wheel arch rubbers
windscreen wipers
NSF wheel bearing
USB socket in centre console
7x annual DIY servicing
additional PTU, Haldex & rear diff lube changes x2
Autobox ATF change x2
2x Dealer servicing (whilst under warranty)
8x MOTs

I think its worth around £9500 now (65K miiles) - but im guessing.

Obviously doing most of the work myself keeps the cost down. But so far the car has been amazing IMO. Jules

I bought my FL2 new in 2012, so it is 12 and a half years old now and only done about 50,000 miles. So far I have replaced the tyres and had a new windscreen. I change the windscreen wiper blades every year at about this time of year. The only problem I have had is with the Haldex and I blame Land Rover for that as they say it does not need servicing. It is the best car I have ever had and one of the things I like the most is the driving position.

Good interesting info , thank you

Two questions please

No mention of auto box fluid change?
Mine has done 94000 miles and is behaving fine but conscious it has had no servicing. My garage is only able to do the partial drain and refill service. Current thoughts are " if it ain't broke don't interfere"

Which vehicle do the upgraded discs come from?

Thanks. FL2 SD4 XS 2013 Orkney Grey

Oh thanks I forgot the Autobox lube changes - I've done that twice. (I'll update my list)

The 316mm disks and carriers are from the FL2 i6.
It uses the same pads and caliper as the TD4. Just came across the carriers (new) on ebay and thought I'll have those for when I need to change the disks.
You can use the original TD4 mudshield too. Jules

For me fuel cost was way more than maintenance and repairs, and depreciation.
I was shocked at how much I paid for fuel over 4 years and 30k miles.

27 Pence per mile on fuel, works out to serious amounts of cash gone up in smoke. It's one of the reasons we replaced the Freelander with an EV. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Yes - its not to be ignored but then you have to factor the purchase cost and depreciation of a new car compared to only the depreciation of an existing old car.

Our SD4 has cost us approx £10600 in fuel over 10 year. For me the numbers dont add up in favour of a new EV - yet.

Annual Costs of current FL2...
Fuel - say £1200
VED - say £350
Insurance say - £350
Depreciation - £1000
MOT - £45
Service DIY £80

Total say £3200
I dont know of any EVs that can match that

But obviously there is more to driving than than simply the running cost eg convenience, reliability, versatility, repairability etc Jules

Ive just had Solar panels and battery installed - I expect an EV to be heading our way at some time.

15 panels (440w), 6kW invertor and 9.5 kWh battery and 7kW charger

Will probably replace the 5yr old Fiesta ST first as that gets used most days and mainly for short journeys.
As it happens the Fiesta has an annoying click when turning the steering at parking speeds - unfortunately the part is not repairable and the replacement steering column is over £1000 + labour Censored Jules

Hi Jimbo & others on this post subject…….

I purchased our FL2 HSE Lux Auto new in 2012 also……after 11 years & 470k miles in a D2 TD5 HSE…lovely engine & car….but couldn’t cure the water leak from s/roof…on wife’s side….so it had to go….also chassis was seriously corroded…..

I have kept all repair details for 156,000 mls to date :

1 Annual dealer service —2013
3 sets of tyres…..plus 2 new front Pirelli Scorpion Verde tomorrow for MOT( good tyres but have worn on edge…after 18k) …poss alignment …..will see
3 sets B/pads….discs original
2 batteries
2 Sets w/w blades
1x S/mtr
C/belt/w/pump etc @150k….was like new ….no wear…but replaced
O/S/R door lock
2x T/gate electric switch
1x MAF Sensor….see my posts from France
1 x MAP sensor ',,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
1 x T/C hose to manifold……as per post above
11 Annual Services……oil & filter in between
1 Pr T/R/Ends…..nearly forgot..
1xSet new 19in alloys….Evoque rims from Powerful.UK……original alloys corroded

I think that’s everything…..not bad for 156k mls…..& it’s still good.
All bulbs on car are original……except front indicator bulbs….replaced last November for MOT….orange lacquer had come off……

As others have said : what to replace FL2 with….? Wife likes new Defender 90 but having spoken to a few owners…they all said they had experienced silly electrical probs…..back to dealer often.
So I’ll keep FL for the moment………..especially now it’s running well……
