Unusual for belts to fail at that milage, I would get a second opinion. 2013 FL2 XS.

The engine is a basic Ford/Peugeot engine, there will be many used examples about for little money, depending how DIY you and your mates are removing the engine and transferring the LR bits to the donor engine. Other option is remove the cylinder head and check the damage and go from there.[/url] my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

"....... If I remember correctly the original mileage specification was 150k or 10 years (whichever is the soonest) but I got shortened at some point to 100k or 7 years......."

If damage is just bent valves and broken rockers, then the parts spend is minor. However a replacement engine wouldn't be much more than repairing the one you have.

I had my belt changed at eight years and 65,000 the one that came off looked brand new, I think if its a TD4 it would probably go to ten yrs and/or 150 k miles it was changed to the lower milage on the SD4 as there were some early belt fails ? 2013 FL2 XS. This is all really helpful thanks - been quoted 15 hours work at £60+VAT to remove and install new engine so if I can find one at approx £750 that would be worth it.

I'd be surprised if a decent mechanic can't change a Freelander 2 engine in under 5 hours. There's not much too it, if pulling the whole unit. Maybe that time is including doing a full service while at it, but I'd do the belt and oil filter before the replacement engine goes in. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate.
