Hello, after lots of trouble free miles,I have a problem....its loosing about 1L of water per 2 weeks...not seeing any puddles , engine oil is fine, cant really see the radiator , I do get that water smell when I open the bonnet , I hope its not the erg cooler as i've very little funds at the moment....no water coming out the exhaust, and running fine. Can the erg cooler be bypassed? leaving the erg in place...the water pump is a year old (gates)..its a 2011 hse diesel ...many thanks for any ideas mike

My first port of call would be the cheapest, a new cap for the header tank. they do get tired and loose
their ability to keep pressure. DAVE.

I would get it up on ramps and remove the underbelly cover run the engine up and look for leaks, though there are no puddles coolant can get blown back. 2013 FL2 XS.

I'd be pretty certain on it being the EGR cooler sadly.

Possibly.
I'll admit that I put a spoonful of K Seal in both of mine when they started leaking there - cured them without further problems.

Had a slight coolant loss on my wife's old VW Tiguan. Nothing obvious but when I got under it you could see pink staining at the bottom of the cambelt cover. It was the waterpump failing. Replaced it along with a timing belt which was about due. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Let us know how it goes Mike. Mine's been needing a liter every couple of months - not enough for me to go for a witch hunt under there just yet.

The heater matrix under the centre dash inside the car can fail at the ends. Check the footwell carpets for moisture. There are lots of hose positions to leak, so its best to go over the lot. Bypass the cooler by joining the two hoses together, it might cause the cooler to give warning codes, overheating. I hate leaks too, and I had the radiator cap stick, and come apart. Had to replace the header tank too.

update....update.......just taken the under car plate off and I can see dripping at the rear of the engine, its dripping onto a large pipe which I think is a radiator hose and it looks like its coming from the turbo area??? there seems to be a silver heatsheid and its coming from behind that....theres nothing to see from the top....any ideas??? its quite a leak...dripping quite fast...thanks

Could be EGR cooler? thats above the heatshield above the turbo in the area you mention?

To get a good view of the EGR cooler from the top and then remove it you need to remove quite a bit to be able to see down the back of the engine. Even then I needed a mirror on a stick to see where the nuts/bolts were.
Its not difficult - just awkward and takes time.
