What do the Letters SD4 HSE mean?

Hi, This may seem an odd question but my FL2 is a 2013 SD4 HSE. I can't find any meaningful explanation online of what model SD4 HSE stands for, signifies or means! Hope you guys can enlighten me. Many thanks in advance, Bob

TD4 vs SD4 = 4 cylinder Turbo diesel vs 4 cylinder Sport diesel (190bhp). As the TD is the "standard" they don't always put it on the back, but standard can be 150 or 160bhp. There is a petrol engine option which I believe is 3.2L V6.

So model variants in no particular order:
Metropolis
Dynamic
Aspen LE
Black SE
Sport LE
S, SE, SE Tech, GS, HSE, HSE Lux, HST
Best bet is to see what toys are fitted, and decide which are must haves, and which are genuinely toys. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Which is called "i6".

It's not a V6, which was on the older Freelander 1, 2,5 Liter, but a straight six, 3,2Liter. 234 Hp, but Volvo have several versions with more Hp. No turbos or compressors, so naturally aspirated.
Nice engine Wink

But that HSE, leaves the designation "SE" a bit silly, if it should be "Specification Equipment", lacking "High".
On my Lotus Esprit Turbo SE, the "SE" means "special equipment" (chargecooler).

Cheers,
Redfox

There was also a 2.0L "i4" petrol, only sold in certain markets, eg Australia etc...
I seem to remember 'Lightwater' (forum member) has one.

the one to steer clear of is the "eD4" which was not 4x4 and had many features removed from the spec.

Funnily enough, it was the eD4 that got me in to the showroom (as a then company car driver looking for low CO2).
The salesman’s first response was “what do you want one of those for?!” 🙄

To some extent the letters are meaningless as they are just the starting point for the toys that are fitted. The original purchaser could add optional toys to improve the specification. So an HSE should have a certain spec level but don’t be surprised if it’s got extras.

Yes, I have the Si4. They cut of 2 cylinders & added a turbo. Great car, a bit thirsty around town. But it's worth the price. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I wouldn't nessesarily avoid the eD4, it doesn't have the Haldex, rear differential or the front PTO (IRD?) which can all be expensive failure points.

If you need the space, want the elevated driving position, and the crash protection with marginally better fuel economy and don't need the 4x4 capability it is a good option compared to a standard saloon car.

Then again I do NEED (want) the 4x4 system, so advising someone to buy one when I wouldn't does seem a litle ingenuous. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Basically it means that you have bought nearly the best model FreeLander available, and definitely the best engine/gearbox combination. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I remember when it was L, GL and GXL cortina. The pecking order in the staff car park to how far up the ladder you was.
