England 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Santorini Black
Transmission error message

Fl2 2012 GS SD4 Auto. 48,000 miles.

I get the error message Transmission fault Traction reduced coming up after about half a mile.

The car seems to be driving normally with no loss of performance in Drive/Reverse, Sport and Command Shift where I can get all gears. It may be using a little more fuel than usual but that is only based on the range showing which is only an approximate guide.

If I select any special programme I get the error message Special programmes off Traction faulty. I have not tried to use any of the special programmes as I have not been off road.

Any ideas or suggestions?

While under warranty the car was serviced at the main stealer and since then at my local good indi LR garage. This fault message came up several months and about 2,000 miles ago but after a couple of weeks it disappeared until now.

Unfortunately I am only able to do very simple and basic maintenance.

Traction reduced, and Special Programs unavailable normally point to a problem with the Haldex. Has it ever been serviced? The car could be only running in 2WD with the rear wheels not available due to a Haldex fault. Other than that, there could be a problem with the abs or a wheel sensor as they are all part of the traction control and special programs system.

Or a dying battery, well known for producing fictitious transmission error, plus a few more, My 2012 SD threw a few before the battery change. Coincidently very near the same mileage my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

A while back I had similar problem to you that came and went over several weeks.

It disappeared altogether while I was waiting for a Dealer fix, and it hasn't reappeared (yet?).

I put it down to sludge or something taking the pressure down, I will look for my original post and AA confirmed Error Codes (that also disappeared).

The problem has been traced to a failed pump in the Haldex unit. My local indie is fixing it today £Ouch. Regretably I don't have the ability to do the job myself.

The Haldex pump, oil and filter has been changed and the software updated but the problem still persists.

My inde' LR specialist has contacted Bell Engineering (I think they are mates) and has been informed that this particular version of the Haldex unit is prone to problems and repairs are not alway successful and for this reason Bell won't undertake repairs to this version of Haldex. The garage is still looking for possible solutions which hopfully will be fruitful, other wise there are three options:

Do nothing. The car drives normally on road but the special programmes are not available.

Replace the Haldex unit. Not on your nelly! ££££££££££££

Keep on looking for a solution. Which is what we are doing.

Ideally I want to keep the car for the best reason - I really like it and for my current motoring needs it serves well. Clearly the fault will reduce the value of the car if I wish to sell or trade in.

Any ideas or suggestions?

That I dont quite understand. There are only 2 versions of the Haldex on the FL2 - Gen 3 and Gen 4 and they are similar. Which version do you have ?

Assuming the fault is with the haldex then I think your options are replace with a recon unit or repair - Either is not hugely difficult but takes time - hence high labour costs.

Update. Mystery solved.

After a week of the same transmission fault message another diagnostic check was done and this showed a problem with the module - which I think is a computer gismo which controls the Haldex (correct me if wrong please). The plan was to remove the module and send it off for refurbishment but when they pulled the electrical plug from the Haldex they found that one pin on the plug was bent and not making proper contact. This probably happened when the unit was reassembled after the service and pump replacement.

With the pin straightend and plugged back in all was well with no diagnostic faults showing and 200 or so miles later there has been no fault message and the car is running very well.

Ive found that connection really hard to pull apart - broke the connector's locking mechanism in doing so - now held together with a cable tie Jules
