Australia 2009 Freelander 2 i6 SE Auto Izmir Blue
LR freelander 2 i6 se Not starting

Hi all
Unfortunately for some reason my 2009 freelander 2 i6se not starting at al
When you push the start button you can hear the starter motor click but no starting at all
I changed the batter still no luck I have uploaded a small video of the problem

Yes, check starter motor + connection and engine earth - these need to be in good condition as the starter draws a high current at only 12v.

Also the ignition switch activates the solenoid which gives a click when it engages with the flywheel ring gear. The now engaged solenoid connects the starter motor to its live feed.
The internal contacts can wear, also causing high resistance and insufficient current for the starter motor to rotate.
Often nothing wrong with the starter motor per se.

You can obtain a repair kit for the starter solenoid. Jules

If I were you I would also

Verify the fuse for the starter hasn't opened (Volt meter: verify battery voltage on both sides of the fuse)

And verify that relay and fuse for the Starter Solenoid are functioning.

I would just swap the relay and the fuse (Like for Like)

Fuse box shown is next to the battery

Hi,

I tend to agree with Rommel & Jules……starter fault. I had same fault years ago with my Disco 2 TD5
with Denso starter…..first thing in the morning it would click…..try again it worked. At the time I was in motor trade so I whipped s/motor off & the electricians replaced the contacts….FOC ( I was good customer)……never gave any more trouble. I had same fault with my FL2 this year….except it would click after a spell of damp weather…..Denso starter again. Being now retired I sent for a brand new unit from J. Craddock’s……not bad £147…..all ok since….the starter that is…VOR at moment……long story ..see my post.

9. Battery – every 4 to 8 years (Low voltage while starting causes electrical gremlins on LR2)
10. O-Rings for Vacuum pump (only if it leaks)
11. AWD Haldex fluid and filter - I used genuine Volvo parts for this (it was cheaper than Land Rover)
12. AWD Replace CV joint grease in drive shaft joint near catalytic converter
13. Leak detection pump filter clean or replace every 5 years (note: not all markets have a leak detection pump) to prevent code P2402

Typical repairs for high mileage 3.2
A) Thermostat – replaced mine at 10 years (also replaced two coolant hoses)
B) Fuel pressure sending unit
C) PCV valve – replaced mine at 113,000 miles
D) Engine mounts
E) AC Compressor or clutch pack - (Installed a new compressor and clutch on the S80)
F) Ignition coils (Some evidence that a failed Thermostat leads to overheating and premature Coil failure)
G) Radiator Fan
H) Wheel Bearings
I) Anti-Drain back valve in oil canister housing failure
J) Radiator
K) Front Struts
L) Rear Shocks

Less common repairs
I. Starter motor - typically fails at 100,000 miles or 10 years
II. Blower Resistor
III. Front Brake calipers refurbished
IV. Loose bolt on alternator pulley
V. Overdrive clutch pulley Alternator
VI. Overdrive clutch pulley READ drive (Serpentine Belt)
VII. BLUETOOTH phone module (bypass with a fiberoptic loop if you don't use it)
VIII. Purge Valve for Fuel Vapor Recovery

I can’t remember last time I saw a FL2 3.2…..fuel too expensive in UK …. & Europe….!

Pete,

The LR2 is my first Land Rover and I want it to last so I search the internet for problems that others have had and I proactively address issue. And I do my best to share what I've learned here on FREEL2

By doing it this way I am able to stay out in front of the problem and not have to rely on the Land Rover Service department to fix my vehicle. My LR2 has been very inexpensive over the last 16 years.

Note: I don't get the drive the LR2 much anymore because my daughter has it with her at University.

2008 LR2 3.2 - My Daughter is the primary driver

2010 S80 3.2 - First cousin to the LR2 with the same 3.2 engine (My niece has the S80 now)


For me these days I mostly drive a convertible Mercedes.

It's an amazing vehicle but its no LAND ROVER.

Your post above referenced a FL2 that you are fixing or getting fixed.
Take some picture and share with FREEL2 if you get a chance.

This is one of the best FORUMS on the internet.
