Poor/intermittent Acceleration

My 2013 Freelander 2 is intermittently (1 in 5 drives) having problems accelerating. It struggles to get enough power to go into 2nd quickly and then the same with 3rd. Once it's moving reasonably well it then either won't go higher than 50mph, or will let you slowly move up in speed to go over 50, but at about a 1/4 of the usual time/pace. For 4 out of 5 drives it's completely fine.

It's been briefly to a very well regarded independent Land Rover mechanic who plugged in diagnostics and couldn't see any immediate reason. There has also been a hoover/resistance type sound in 5th and 6th gear, which he thinks is down to a not so great gear box (a refurbished one was fitted 4 years ago)

He couldn't give me a reason for the acceleration issue, but hasn't had the car in for a full look through.

I need to make a long journey next week and am trying to work out if this car is going to make it. I know it's had a fuel filter change recently and wondered if there were any thoughts on what the acceleration issue could be and whether it could cause the car to suddenly break down?

Repair garages near me have a three week wait time at the moment, so I've reserved a hire car for the long journey, just in case but its's all extra cost and I've just spent £850 on wear and tear issues!

Any thoughts very much appreciated. I know there can sometimes be Freelander 2 specific issues, even though they're generally a great car.

Sounds like you fitted the wrong type of Fuel Filter and are getting 'Limp Home Mode'.

The genuine LR (LR Like) filters have a valve in them that controls the flow during warm up.

Other issue is Fuel Tank Wiring, but as far as I know, it only affected early models up to 2013 facelift.

Are you not getting any 'Reduced Performance' messages? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Thanks for those thoughts Ian, it's much appreciated.

i've had the limp home mode come on before - the red triangle, with an exclamation mark - and that's not showing and the problem feels different if that makes sense.

In the limp mode it really was just hanging in there. With this fault it just feels like the power isn't there - until you get higher in the gears.

It's interesting that there's also a noise when I'm higher in gear (the mechanic spotted that it was only in high gear) and I'm wondering if all of this could be the replacement gear box that went in 4 years ago. It was a refurbished one, rather than a Land Rover one (£3000 rather than £4000-5000) and the first one that went in had a fault. The second one has been ok all this time but it could be causing problems now...

Re the fuel filter, I believe the right one went in. I'm not so sure about the rewiring you mentioned though. If I'm missing anything you said apologies, I'm writing without being able to see your reply.

It's just a bit frustrating for two mechanics to not understand what it is - both of them have had a look at the car, to varying degrees.

Your first paragraph describes 'Limp Mode' exactly.

To add to my previous comments, one other idea for a common (Limp Home) fault that comes and goes is a sticking Turbo Vane Actuator.
