I am sure that about 750rpm is the correct idle speed, perhaps very slightly higher for Auto.

Might be worth cleaning the MAF and MAP sensors? Neighbour had similar issue and put Diesel fuel treatment in and gave it a good blast up the Motorway which cured it. again worth a try. 2013 FL2 XS.

Good Idea looking for Leaky Pipes and Loose Clips/Joints, the gas you can smell must be coming from somewhere.

Check the throttle body for carbon build up stopping the the butterfly operating correctly at low revs. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
