Hi all,

First post on the Freel2 forum! I've recently purchased a 2011 2.2 SD4 and I'm experiencing hiccups on idle. The revs rhymically drop from around 1000rpm to 750rpm and back up, repeatedly whilst I'm stopped at lights/in traffic etc. Occasionally, I've felt it might stall. Combined with that issue, when stopped, I'm also smelling exhaust fumes in the cabin (appreciate this might be unrelated). Both issues do not present when driving and it otherwise runs well. No smoking on start or otherwise.
Had the EGR valve out over the weekend, it wasn't that caked. Cleaned it up but the issues are still present. Found small leak on EGR valve to cooler, thought that might be the cause of the exhaust fumes but replaced the gasket and the fumes are still happening. EGR valve and cooler were both replaced 20,000 miles ago by previous owner.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I am sure that about 750rpm is the correct idle speed, perhaps very slightly higher for Auto.

Do you have any DCT Error Codes?

I had a search for similar problems on the Forum, but annoyingly the various OPs did not finish off their Threads with what resolved the problem.

When idling the ECM will be trying to make sense of inputs from the MAF, EGR, etc. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Might be worth cleaning the MAF and MAP sensors? Neighbour had similar issue and put Diesel fuel treatment in and gave it a good blast up the Motorway which cured it. again worth a try. 2013 FL2 XS.

I'm going to look at error codes later on and see what I find. I did wonder about the EGR cooler bypass actuator, should hopefully get a code for that if there's an issue.

I'll also take a look at the MAF and MAP sensors.

Unfortunately tried the fuel treatment but no joy.

Also ordered an inspection mirror to see if I can see any pipe splits etc

Good Idea looking for Leaky Pipes and Loose Clips/Joints, the gas you can smell must be coming from somewhere.

When starting from cold have you had a good look, under bonnet and under car, for steam/condensation escaping from the Exhausts or Airways.

On re-reading your post, did you have the smell before you touched the EGR system?

Check the throttle body for carbon build up stopping the the butterfly operating correctly at low revs. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.
