TCM worn out

Hi,

I recently found that the TCM for my LR Freelander2 HSE (2011) isn't working. The vehicle in limping in the 3rd gear and the only other gear that it has is the Reverse gear. Yes of course the park gear and neutral are all working, but the drive is only in 3rd gear.

After some googling I could find that the part that matches my VIN number is LR014467 and I purchased one. Once the part reached me I found that the circuit in it is entirely different from the one I have. I had to do it this way bcos the writings on my TCM are all faded out and is completely blank. The only thing I could figure out from it is a serial number.


The one on top (with those small chipsets) is the one I recieved as LR014467 and the one from my vehicle is the one below.

Now that the vehicle cannot be moved without the TCM, I am in search of this module.

Upon more research I could find that there are 2 part numbers for LR Freelander2!
LR014467 (Original TCM)
LR031137 (Alternate/Regional TCM)
Don't know if this is true or not.

This one is for Mazda CX9, but that is the only one I could find on based on the outer appearance of my TCM. I also close compared with those numbers on mine with the one in link.

Can someone help me with the some inputs on whether this will be compatible, at the least by reprogramming it.

This 'Limp Home' Explanation was in the linked thread below.

Limp Home
If a transmission fault is detected by the TCM, the TCM adopts a limp home strategy and a message 'TRANSMISSION FAULT LIMITED GEARS AVAILABLE' is displayed in the message center. If the fault has an effect on engine emissions, the MIL in the instrument cluster will also be illuminated.
In limp home mode, P, R and N functions operate normally (if the fault allows these selections) and the TCM locks the transmission in 3rd gear to allow the driver to take the vehicle to a Land Rover dealer or approved repairer. Torque converter lock-up is disabled and reverse-lock-out will not function.
If the vehicle is stopped and subsequently restarted in the limp home mode condition, the TCM operates normally until the fault which caused the condition is detected again.

Worth trying other forums as the Aisin Auto Gearbox is widely used including the closely related Volvo XC60.

What DTC Error Codes are you getting?
Unless you you already know why the Transmission Control Module is giving 'Limp Mode' then it is worth a look as something External or Internal to the Autobox may have failed and the TCM is asking correctly for 'Limp Mode'.

The Freelander Repair and Wiring Diagrams Manual (in this link) has pages and pages of info and DTCs for the TCM starting on page 141 (of 3229)

A bit more to the history:
When it limped first, the error it was throwing on the scanner was:



Seeing the "solenoid A pressure control" error, I had the valve body replaced, but post that the scanner was still throwing the same error!
Valve body


That's how we pinpointed the issue to that of TCM and got the replacement one - LR014467
Upon fitting the new TCM the error that's coming up is P0614-00.



On a separate question, how can I figure out the part number from the TCM I have got.

This is the one I got as LR014467


Having said the whole history, this issue has already burnt my pocket a bit, I am extra cautious going forward. And you guys are helping me a lot on those.

Initially this was working. I could run the vehicle normally for a few weeks by stopping it for 2 mins and restarting. But off late this method is also not working.

Thanks for history, I did not know from the original post how much you had already investigated.

Are you sure that the signal is getting to the TCM, and you haven't a damaged loom/wiring/connector, if so this would save changing TCM..

I've actually had this problem and solved it by replacing the TCM but it won't work unless you can code it to the vehicle using SDD and you also need the old TCM as part of the coding sequence as long as the part number is the same this is possible using a used TCM takes about an hour to do Thumbs Up

I'd recommend you contact a business called auto fault finder.

From the Repair Manual

Line Pressure Control Solenoid - SLT

The line pressure control solenoid (SLT) is installed on the front valve body. The solenoid is controlled in a linear manner by the TCM which uses throttle opening degree signals and engine torque information from the Engine Control Module (ECM) to determine the solenoid operation. The solenoid controls the line pressure applied to the clutches and brakes to provide smooth shifting.

If the solenoid fails, the TCM will remove the current supplied to the solenoid. Maximum line pressure will be applied to the clutches and brakes unless the failure is due to the solenoid valve sticking, which may result in low line pressure.


It doesn't say, but at a guess, the STL (Line Pressure) is governed by a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal from the TCM.

As for part numbers, when I Google for FL2 TCM this is what comes up. (LR031137) ?

PS Interestingly on another subject of 'Hard Auto Gearshifts' is this solenoid sticking/failing the cause of those poor hard changes in and out of gear? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Thanks for the responses buddies!

Sorry for the delayed response, as I was away from the internet for few days.

Current status is that, I am sourcing a new TCM. Hope to get in a week or more.
Solenoids are all tested already, the current from them looks good to the mechanic. Earlier it had an issue in one of the solenoid current and that's how I ended up replacing the valve body. That's how now we are nailing it down to faulty TCM.

Fingers crossed! Waiting for the TCM and hope it should clear all the faults.

I am right now located in Kochi, Kerala.
When I was in Bangalore, Bay6 located in Hosa road was my regular place, close acquaintance with the folks there Smile
