Road tax

With the announcement of the big green push, how much do we think that our road tax is going up by next budget. An extra £30 to £50 I think would be a good bet.

It'll definitely go up, as the government needs to play catch-up for the previous government's apathy on green commitments.
I'd not be surprised to see fuel taxes go up either, which is a pain for those unable to afford an EV at this point in time.

Obviously as more EVs become available on the second hand market, more people with will graduate migrate over to them. However this isn't the only issue, as public charging is still rather expensive at the moment.

Also EVs will eventually pay some form of RFL, so it's not just ICE driver's that need to worry about increased costs. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Trouble is if the road tax goes up it will make them worthless so how can anyone afford an electric car if their car is worthless. Think a lot of people not going to be happy. Just depends how much they turn the screws in one hit

Well whatever it is Im going to have to pay it, unless I buy a nice cheap-ish classic vehicle.

IIRC The term "Road tax" ceased to exist in the 1960s and was replaced by the Vehicle Excise Duty, which is just a tax on cars, with various criteria.

Roads are paid for via general taxation which I think is the correct thing to do as everyone benefits from roads whether you have a car or not. So horse owners , EV owners pedestrians and cyclists all pay for the roads they use and gain benefit from.

The only "road tax" we drivers pay is that in the fuel we buy - a sort of "pay for MPG" tax. Jules

I think also if road tax goes up a lot there is a good chance more un taxed un insured cars will be on the road. Breaking the law is all about risk and reward if the tax and insurance is more then the cost of the car why bother, if it’s siezed by the police nothing is lost as they have saved the tax and insurance.

yep, un-taxed vehicles are often associated with other criminal activities - drugs, prostitution, people trafficking, theft & burglary etc etc Jules

Think it would surprise people how many there are working in normal jobs who don’t have a license,tax insurance etc. it’s not just a criminal thing. Like I said it’s risk to reward, chances of getting stopped etc

i was watching a guy on youtube who was doing a piece about insurance costs, he was having major problems himself for various reasons but he interviewed a (blurred out) bloke who had no insurance or license but was freely driving around in his partners car which was taxed, mot and insured in HER name only, so it never pinged the ANPR cameras and he could drive around scot free and illegal.

In places like Canada, it is the car which is taxed and insured each year, I think it is marked on the number plate.

This allows anyone to drive the car (although on a basic level insurance).
As I understand it, you have to take out additional private cover to bring it up to our Comprehensive level.

Could we not Tax and (3rd party) Insure all road vehicles automatically and raise the money with Fuel
Tax (on Petrol, Diesel, Electricity) to pay for it.

Perhaps some money could also be added to pay for repairing our appalling cross country roads.

I am aware that this will not solve the problem of our streets which are becoming more and more clogged with rarely used (2nd, 3rd, and so forth) cars. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Living in Spain my comprehensive insurance for a Mazda CX-9 270 bhp petrol is 525€ and road tax 188€ per year, any driver over 25 with permission, they don't have NCB here but I can have all my minor bumps and scratches removed for free every 3 years.
I wanted a Freelander2 but for a 2014 Metro or HSE SD4 if I could find one would be 16000€ with over 150000KM probably nearer 200000km, all LR models are expensive here they have a very good reputation, a Disco 3 with between 250k to500K on the clock 2007 to 2009 will be between 4500€ to 10000€. They are even asking up to 10000€ for a Freely1 my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

That would be so much better IMO. But I dont think the insurers wouldnt like it, nor those living in rural areas, driving FFRs.

We can drive our daughter's car in Oz without needing additional insurance. So much simpler than the palaver we go through having to insure one of ours when she's in UK. Jules

I would not rush to bye a electric car, it's like the vhs and betamax, blue ray and dvd days, I think a lot of people are going to get stuck with electric cars worth nothing.

We installed 3 phase to the garage in 2016 for, to be honest, possible car charging in the future (now next vehicle will most likely be a wheelchair). It was a small part of an electrical upgrade of our block of units. $500 for 25 metre run from the meter. Obviously still got the Freelander... it will be very hard to replace when the day comes!

Anyway. There seems to be more insurance issues of EVs when they are housed within main building structure.

Not only that, there are more issues with all lithium "vehicles". We are looking at warnings signs in our block of units that any lithium charging has to be supervised while charging, as per advice.

It's probably a bit of "covering your bum" stuff, another one of those things at the very least we feel needs to be taken onboard.

It did all seem to be far simpler decades ago. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Just been watching car Uk on YouTube he goes to the car auctions and comments on prices. A freelander 2 2010 went through for £1500. At those prices I would not get much of an electric car for that or any other car for that matter. I guess the tax rises are biting.

EVs are now simply loosing money at the same rate as petrol cars, which is fine. People complained they're too expensive, now people are complained they're getting cheaper. Big Cry

The truth is a BEV will cost far less to run and maintain than an equivalent ICE, so the depreciation isn't so painful as someone who's bought an ICE instead.
Our Ioniq 5 has covered 3600 miles since we've had it, and it's cost less then £280 in electricity, which is including 8 sessions of rapid charging at very expensive rapid charger rates.
Now how many equivalent ICE vehicles do you think will cover 3600 miles on £280 of fuel? Our Audi would cost about £700 in diesel for the same distance, and the Freelander over £1k in derv.
At these low running costs, very few owners will feel stuck with an EV, in fact only a few % would go back to ICE.

Yes the tech is new, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I for one don't mine them loosing money more quickly now, as it means I'll be able to spend less on a second hand one, when we say goodbye to our last ICE vehicle.

I look forward to the day when a BEV is just called a car, because that's all it is. It's a car with a different fuel source. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
