I've just bought a 2014 Freelander 2 SD with just 33,000km (20,600 miles) on the clock. Possibly the lowest miles Freelander 2 in Australia. I bought it sight unseen and had it shipped from Canberra to Perth (via Sidney). On my first drive, I was surprised how heavy the steering was. I had the tracking checked but it was to specification. A couple of mechanics told me the steering effort was normal but I still have a 2013 Freelander 2 so it was easy to compare the effort required.

Really interesting read of this thread, seems there's isn't one cure for all.

I'm guessing, but as you've replaced the pump then its likely to be the rack isn't it. Jules |

I think that the clue to follow is that the pump is not supplying enough pressure at low RPM.

That's my problem I'm guessing at this point lol, my logic would say if it's the rack then why when increasing revs the power steering acts normal if the rack was shot it would do it all the time wouldn't it? |

In the absence of a conclusive diagnosis, usually if a problem persists people change the units out one by one until it is fixed. Assuming the replacement units are working as they should of course |

The more I read the highlighted paragraph in my previous post the more I believe it is a faulty Steering Pump.

As cars become more and more integrated systems, then the chances of willy-nilly changing of parts without some setting up of associated mechanical, or electronic, systems becomes less and less possible. Worth remembering that modern cars are full of sensors and reporting systems so the reading of OBD Error Codes should be routine as part of the diagnosis, and before starting to change anything. Did you not fit a new reservoir? There’s every possibility that the filter in the reservoir is blocked, as per the earlier post/pic. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

I think my next step is to try and source a known working second hand pump, the new bought I bought was off ebay and fingers and toes crossed it's just a bad pump.

So I swapped out the pump but the problem persists.
