Gearbox Fault Traction Reduced when weather is hot?

Hi all,

I have a 2013 facelift HSE.

I have in the past had issues with the Haldex and Gearbox, now both replaced.

However, I have had the dreaded 'Gearbox Fault Traction Reduced' message several times over recent months, but only when the weather is hot. Given that the weather has been so awful, it appears to be very obvious that it only happens when the dash display shows a temperature of around 27c.

If anybody has any idea why that might be, I'd be extremely appreciative of your advice.

Many thanks in advance,

Tom.

27 degrees , should only be a problem for a couple of days then . Very Happy
but perhaps a haldex service new filters clean the pump filter new oil should sort it or give you a starting point . 2009 FL2 S now gone

I take it that you have had the 10 year service, and that includes Autobox oils, but not Haldex. (this may be irrelevant if the Haldex was changed recently)

I have read through your history - how did your previous Traction Reduced problem end?
https://www.freel2.com/forum/post436932.html#436932

Early FL2s tended to have AutoBox Flaring problems when warm, but I have not heard of this on post MY13 cars. but is the only temperature related gearbox fault I can remember.

Link to same gearbox on Volvo site (doesn't seem to be your problem)

The number of 27c+ days that we get should not be much of a problem. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I have MY13 XS SD4. In hot conditions I get what sounds like Haldex slipping when setting off from start or accelerating from a slower speed under gentle throttle. I think it may be caused by the Haldex clutch plates sticking? Hopefully a Haldex clean and service will sort it . FL2 SD4 XS 2013 Orkney Grey

No problems with haldex issues on our car with multiple days of mid 40ies. Sometimes just going for a brief walk in the middle of nowhere & leaving the engine running, & air conditioning!

Both the Autobox and Haldex were replaced just over 2 years ago, so I've not had them serviced yet, although I intend to fairly soon as have now covered 20k miles.

The issue in the post you linked was never resolved as such, but a day or so after driving through the water (I wouldn't really call it wading), the message disappeared. A week or two later, I again had to drive through a flooded patch of road and it happened again... warning on for a few days, then, presumably when it had fully dried out, it went.

This is similar in that it is most definitely triggered when the car has been sat baking in the heat. I went out to it late as night once the ambient temperature had cooled and it was fine. Same again this morning. But about 2 hours ago I went out to it once it was really hot (car reading 30c), and the warning was back.

I'm thinking it must be an electrical issue?

The more I think about your symptoms the more it sounds like Autobox (Flaring?) and not the Haldex (as it is designed to slip to varying degrees under electronic control)

This Thread describes symptoms (like momentary slipping clutch) quite well, although that case proved to be Transmission Valve Case. My post is on second page of thread -- I am not sure what the fix for flaring is, but still worth a read.

Problem 1: When the transmission is hot, such as driving uphill in the mountains, the transmission will hunt between gears multiple times within a few seconds (usually between gears 2-3 but sometimes 1-2 also) and abruptly jerk the car as it does it.

Problem 2: When pulling out of a side street into traffic while making a left hand turn only, and accelerating with approx 3/4 throttle or more, occasionally the transmission feels like it slips out of gear for a split second and slams back into gear. It's harsh enough that I try to make all of my accelerating left turns very gently with minimal throttle needed to get the job done.

PS I had to edit this post because I mixed up the two different posters on this thread. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Might be worth checking for a OBD Error code that may be triggering the Traction Reduced message.
Otherwise the only think of oil viscosity changing with temperature.

I had a Traction Control message occur for a couple of weeks, about 3 years ago. It kept recurring and was checked by an AA man under my Extended warranty. It went away before I could get it fixed and has never occurred since. I thought it may have been a partially blocked Haldex filter. (If it fails I will get it replaced under warranty. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Thanks for the post. The slipping noise seems to come from the rear of the vehicle. Although strangely enough last summer I pulled the Haldex fuse and the noise continued? No reoccurrance so far this summer. FL2 SD4 XS 2013 Orkney Grey

Just to update... I checked the vehicle several times yesterday and even into the evening the temperature gauge was reading 25c+ and the fault message remained.

This morning at 15c, warning gone.
