I am sure that, on the cars that I have owned, the times that I have experienced tyre sidewall damage has increased as the tyre profiles have become more extreme.

I have 19 inch rims and the combination of thinner radial tyre sidewalls (cross-plies were much thicker) and short sidewalls make it more likely that any pothole will pinch tyre against rim. Over the years I have lost many tyres prematurely with cuts and bulges.

I also believe that the lower profile 19 inch tyres fitted to the FL2 can make the steering a little oversensitive to road surfaces and imperfections.
Supersensitive steering is not always the best for a large 4x4 SUV. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Personally I felt the FL2 was better for the R19 wheels in terms of steering.

I had 2 pinch punctures on my bicycle last week thanks to pot holes.
I think it may be due to general move to wider tyres and lower pressures as science has shown that on roads at least wider softer tyres have can have a lower rolling resistance on a bicycle and are definitely more comfortable.

I used to use 23mm tyres at 120psi and now use 28mm at 80psi, you can go wider and softer still if your road bike has wide enough forks. Jules

The all terrain tyres I am running are 255/60r18 vs the road tyres 235/60r28 that came with the car.

The AT tyres are a lot more solid than the road tyres. When I first had them the car was notably more stable on the road. Road tyres are more flexible.

The disadvantage of AT tyres is noise. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

It's a good job it wasn't on the inside where you couldn't see it  Common sense isn't very common.
