Just driven down the M6 and noticed this when parked back at home. Think we were rather lucky. Tyre hadnt lost pressure and felt no vibration at all.



SWMBO been driving around the Yorkshire Dales for a few days whilst my buddy and I cycled the Yorkshire Dales Way. She didnt recall an tyre related incident but she said the route they took up to Tan Hill was pretty bad.
Tyres are 5 years old and 30K miles. Was going to change them this summer anyway.

Have ordered Michelin Cross-Climate from Black Circles - 10% off at the moment. Getting a 4 wheel alignment too. Jules

Good spot Jules, that could have been nasty! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Glad you spotted it and everyone is ok.

I did similar damage, years ago, to a tyre on a road edge pot hole. My tyre lost all its air immediately.

Insides of tyres are hard to inspect, I had a surprise MOT failure a couple of years ago with a huge bulge on inside wall. Like you I had no symptoms although I am sure that the inner tyre structure was quite badly damaged. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I've just checked it again, and its still showing 2.4bar incredible !

They only update when the car is doing about 20kph, at least my one does.



I am a bit surprised that you had a catastrophic tyre failure & not know about it.

But it may have been Murphy's Law at the time of parking the car in your favour, safety wise.

But unfortunately not dollar (£) wise! Fortunately not resulting in an accident.

But nevertheless that there was not a hint of a leak leading up to the situation is in itself interesting.

Fourth 'but' (I apologize)... But at least if you had driven off from the next usage of the car you would have noticed the tyre expunging itself of life!

The point of TPMS is to catch slow or fast pressure reduction on the move.

Slow pressure reduction or very slow pressure reduction (remove screw etc & plug tyre when convenient. 4 times in Western Australia in 2018).

Fast pressure reduction, stop instantly or at least pull over to as safe as possible position on the side of the road. Hopefully to save tyre before expungtion!

We had a false alarm on a road in North Western Australia, 4000 road trains & associated vehicles used this road every 24 hours, mostly road trains. A mining site vehicle pulled up to help us, pulled over to the side of the road. We explained that our TPMS "went off". Had a good conversation of being "prepared" in these "hostile" environments.

TPMS has paid for itself so many times, & not only in the value of saved & plugged tyres! I would be lost without it not having feedback on the dashboard. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I checked it using my hand-held gauge. It hadnt significantly deflated in 2 days.

I have the standard Freelander TPMS which just alarms if tyre pressure is low - its pretty good as its identified a few slow "nail in Tyre" punctures.

You can see through the gash that the inner carcass is still intact. Jules

Due to traveling in outback Australia where it's about tyres, tyres & tyres.... && tyres!

I have noticed myself being "quite" aware of so many other cars in the city being under inflated on a corner or two.

I have to stop myself looking at these soon to be forthcoming easily avoidable "expensive" situations if possible!

I suppose it's the current era where if there is the slightest of problems you trigger your EPIRB, if you know what one is! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

It's surprising the change in pressure from summer to winter.

The other day the tyres were down to 25psi due to the cold weather in the morning.

Summer they are about 34psi, & that's not seriously hot weather. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Tyres heat up as they roll. I wonder how much does ambient air and ground temp affects the temp the tyres reach at say motorway speeds ? Jules

In summer mine are 32psi when they haven't been running & ambient temperature roughly 25°C. On hotter days a few PSI more. We often have temperatures in the high 20ies. Then there is the very hot days which we generally stay indoors.

In the outback doing 90 - 95kph (most drive at this speed to save fuel due to the vast distances) the tyres increase about 3 to 4psi. But some of that is the sun. One can drive for an hour with the sun on one side of the car. The sunny side will heat up another degree. The shadow side will cool down a degree, or a whisker more.

When we first got TPMS I was quite surprised just how much tyre pressure changes.

A few times in the outback sleeping in the car overnight, we had temperatures a couple of degrees below zero. I have forgotten the tyre pressure, but at the time it was an eye opener the reduction in pressure. Also making the tyres even colder is the condensation on them which then evaporates.


Which got me thinking about all these stupid rubber band tyres where you really need to keep pressure in a very narrow range.


The ARB TPMS I have, the alarm will go off at + or - 8psi. So if letting down the tyres for sand, say 20psi. I need to drop the midpoint of the alarm warning. At 20psi I usually set the midpoint at 26psi. So it goes off at 18psi or 34psi. On dirt corrugated roads we set the pressure at 24psi & don't go faster than 80kph. It's a much more comfortable ride.


If you have a slow leak from say a screw. One will notice that corner PSI going down a touch over a day or a week.

Even parked in the garage the left side is always a bit warmer than the right. Often have 1 degree difference. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
