After putting over 100K on a Skoda Octavia in just over two years I wish LR could manage that level of reliability, and despite the excellent efforts of my local LR dealer they would still be hard pushed to beat the Skoda dealer for service. Fuel Gauge

I had a problem with my gauge stuck on halfway even though I knew I had a full tank. My local garage had a look at it and said the sensors in the fuel tank must have gone. estimate cost £400+ to replace them as a very labour intensive job having to take the fuel tank off etc. I ask the guy if they could reset the on board computer, which he replied "wouldn't make a difference" so booked the car in for the week after. I don't know if it's just my car but sometimes when starting it up it resets everything, well the weekend before the car was due in it did just that, and hey presto the fuel gauge has been working again since then. When I rang up to cancel the repair and told the guy what had happened, his reply was "car's dont mend them selves" Thumbs Up Steve Partridge

Love the "cars dont mend themselves" bit, but coming from a LR dealer quite apt as "they often dont mend them even when they try" All FL2's (3) Gone

Thanks for the responses guys, the car has started doing it again but only when less than half a tank so I am now convinced it is the fuel sender unit not instrument pack and even more convinced Williams in Manchester have no idea what they are talking about...have had a problem EVERY time it has been in there including fitting a replacement light in a different colour!

It's my wife's car and she is understandably annoyed with this problem so I will get the sender units replaced by another dealer or the local Indie who does a great job servicing my 330d, not going near Williams again! SHINY BLACK BEAUTY - FL2GS AUTO WITH A FEW OPTIONS...AFTERMARKET (SO FULL!!) I've got a similar problem and now have to keep the tank half full and above. Have had the fuel warning light come on and gauge drop to zero when just above a quarter full, but then sit for a short while and it starts to rise again.

Fuel gauge never shows absolutely full despite the filler neck being full.

Somewhere on here, and I've tried searching but to no avail, was a reference to a firm who can do the necessary replacements by trepanning the floor above the tank and swapping everything out. Can anyone please point me in their direction or the correct post for me.

Thanks.

In theory there is a hole under the rear seat covered by a rubber bung about 150-200mm diameter, this is for access to the fuel gauge / pump.

Unfortunately I "nudged" my tank rearwards off road very early days (1 week in?) and wasn't able to use this facility, so had to take the tank out, twice. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Thanks Andy and Ian - I'll have a look for the access hole next time the back seats are out and I did read the Land rover tech stuff - way beyond my abilities these days sadly.

So keeping it topped up will have to do, but I will have a go at reclipping connectors, just in case...

Check the filler cap?

I had a problem with the fuel gauge in mine (2011 SD4) on our last trip: I had filled the tank from near empty, and noticed soon after that the gauge only showed less than half full. I tried various starting and stopping and locking experiments to no avail.

Out of curiosity, I opened the filler cap - which was in itself unremarkable, no tightness or whooshing - replaced the cap, and when I started the car the gauge read full.

Normally I drive on smooth roads with more than a third of a tank. This trip was on dirt roads, long distances, and a few full to empty cycles. Hasn't happened again but I haven't been out bush again.

I'd be interested to hear if opening the fuel cap on yours makes any difference. I don't know why it would, or if my experience was just a coincidence, but it would be nice to know what's going on. Good luck.

My 2009 Freelander did that for about 6 months. It would usually correct itself with the stop. Key out. key in, Restart. I also disconnected the battery, and did a hard reset. For some unknown reason it stopped doing it, and has not done it for a few years. Hence, I have just left it alone.

Hasn't had any effect but there is a definite whoosh when the filler cap is undone. Can't tell if it's blowing out or sucking in though.

I still feel that the most likely cause of these intermittent Fuel Gauge problems is poor electrical connections or damaged wiring in the harness.

The best way of finding it is to move the wiring around and reconnect any plugs whilst inspecting the pins/sockets. The act of disturbing the wiring may solve the problem permanently. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
