After putting over 100K on a Skoda Octavia in just over two years I wish LR could manage that level of reliability, and despite the excellent efforts of my local LR dealer they would still be hard pushed to beat the Skoda dealer for service. Shame the cars are sooooo boring to drive Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner |

I had a problem with my gauge stuck on halfway even though I knew I had a full tank. My local garage had a look at it and said the sensors in the fuel tank must have gone. estimate cost £400+ to replace them as a very labour intensive job having to take the fuel tank off etc. I ask the guy if they could reset the on board computer, which he replied "wouldn't make a difference" so booked the car in for the week after. I don't know if it's just my car but sometimes when starting it up it resets everything, well the weekend before the car was due in it did just that, and hey presto the fuel gauge has been working again since then. When I rang up to cancel the repair and told the guy what had happened, his reply was "car's dont mend them selves" Steve Partridge |

Thanks for the responses guys, the car has started doing it again but only when less than half a tank so I am now convinced it is the fuel sender unit not instrument pack and even more convinced Williams in Manchester have no idea what they are talking about...have had a problem EVERY time it has been in there including fitting a replacement light in a different colour!

I've got a similar problem and now have to keep the tank half full and above. Have had the fuel warning light come on and gauge drop to zero when just above a quarter full, but then sit for a short while and it starts to rise again.

In theory there is a hole under the rear seat covered by a rubber bung about 150-200mm diameter, this is for access to the fuel gauge / pump.

Thanks Andy and Ian - I'll have a look for the access hole next time the back seats are out and I did read the Land rover tech stuff - way beyond my abilities these days sadly.

I had a problem with the fuel gauge in mine (2011 SD4) on our last trip: I had filled the tank from near empty, and noticed soon after that the gauge only showed less than half full. I tried various starting and stopping and locking experiments to no avail.

My 2009 Freelander did that for about 6 months. It would usually correct itself with the stop. Key out. key in, Restart. I also disconnected the battery, and did a hard reset. For some unknown reason it stopped doing it, and has not done it for a few years. Hence, I have just left it alone. |

"I'd be interested to hear if opening the fuel cap on yours makes any difference. "

I still feel that the most likely cause of these intermittent Fuel Gauge problems is poor electrical connections or damaged wiring in the harness. The best way of finding it is to move the wiring around and reconnect any plugs whilst inspecting the pins/sockets. The act of disturbing the wiring may solve the problem permanently.
