Clunk when changing directions

Hello!

I've owned my car now for just shy of a couple of months and a couple of weeks after purchasing noticed that when I pull onto my steep drive there is a clunk from the rear when I'm about halfway up. The same clunk then happens again when I drive off from the drive. I've also got a very small shudder through the seat when driving too. The shudder is more noticeable once you're above 40mph I'd say, although doesn't get worse and doesn't drive out past a certain speed.

We suspected the Haldex and I've just serviced it which I thought resolved the issue although doesn't seem to have made any difference. I've tried looking to see if anyone has shared similar issues but I haven't found anyone yet. The car is an Auto on 103K.

If anyone has any suggestions or knowledge of what it may be I'd be very grateful.

Check propshaft centre bearing also all the UJs as a starting point. could be out of balance prop look to see if there are any weights missing, other possible things could be rear diff?

What year and model? 2013 FL2 XS.
Defender 90 300 TDi.

If its not U/J s or propshaft imbalance then I would look at Engine Mounts, although I am surprised that your vibration is not seemingly related to either RPM or Road Speed.

Have you checked that vibration is not affected by putting gearbox in sport and manually selecting different Gears/RPM.

Also try rocking your car backwards and forwards in gear to help diagnose Clunk. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Finding the source of driveline clunks, whines, vibrations and creaks can be a bit time consuming.

Basically anything on the driveline that moves can wear out. So you need to start with things that are easy to get to and work from one end to the other.
I find its often a two person job - with wheels up one person turning something like a wheel, the other feeling for slack/movement. Jules

You could also get some ‘chassis ears’, basically microphones you attach to components to check for noises.

So we’ve had it up this evening and looks like it’s still the haldex unit. Checked the prop and UJ’s and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Although tested the theory of whether it was still the haldex by pulling the fuse and the clunk and judder disappeared.. Think its time to do some shopping 😂
