FL2 2014 dash sensor

Hi, after 3 years and while on a long and dull bitumen-only drive, my eye was caught by a small sensor in the silver strip on the dash between the radio on/off button and the analog clock, and just under the HOME MENU button.

Any ideas what it is? I thought it might be a light sensor to dim dash lights, but covering it has no effect.

Simply curious...

I recently upgraded from a 2010 FL2 HSE manual to a 2013 SD4 Automatic version and that was one of the first things that caught my eye! Still not worked out what it is!?

It is one of the light sensors controlling brightness for the centre controls and the instrument panel.
