FL2 - 2.2 TD4 - Broke down, won't start. Suggestions? | |
I'm posting about a friend's car. Here's the story:
2009 2.2 TD4. 180k miles or so. He broke down a week ago. Was doing 70, engine just cut out. Called recovery, who told him the cambelt had gone and that he should take it to the scrap yard. He was 180 miles away, but messaged me, and I said to get it brought home as the belt was not high mileage so it might be something else, and in the end there's £20 difference between scrap value dropped off and scrap value collected, so we felt it was worth a punt.
Turning it over, it sounds like it has good compression. The cam belt has not failed (although I have not checked the timing, in case it's "jumped" a tooth or something like that). Cam belt looks in good condition.
There were a number of errors that the recovery person sent him before clearing the ECU codes, one of which was the camshaft sensor, amongst the litany of others which appear unrelated.
Local Landy specialist says they can't look at the car until at least the end of the month, and he needs a car (a number of reasons).
I've got an iCarsoft, so put it on there, and wasn't seeing any fuel pressure when cranking (0.24Mpa). So, as they were available cheaply and locally (and because of reading a number of posts on here about what is needed to get it to crank), we have changed the crank sensor, high pressure pump and camshaft sensor. I know there's an element of 'firing the parts cannon' at it, but needs must, etc., and it was less cost overall than an hour of specialist's time.
When cranking (200 ish rpm) I saw 24Mpa on the live data just now, but the car still doesn't start.
There are no fault codes on the ECU other than one to do with the Fan 1 circuit. If I unplug the cam sensor then this does generate a fault, so I'm assuming the wiring to that is OK.
Car isn't here, so I can't just try things randomly as I would if it was my car and it was here. Any tools need to be taken over there and because of his home situation I don't want to take the car to bits and leave him with a mess to deal with as he's already got enough stress in his life!
Any ideas on what to look at next? I'm competent, but haven't needed to go deep on any modern diesel as the ECU has always pointed me in the right direction (working on Focus TDCIs and Renault G9Us a fair bit), or I've had enough knowledge to know what to do. But I'm starting from zero here, so if there are any sensible things to look at next, it would be appreciated.
