Was watching a YouTube video from Geoff Buys Cars a BP garage refused him fuel because his classic car needs it's rear engine cover lifting to access the fuel filler. Apparently it's BP standard practice to refuse fuel if a bonnet a boot or any door is open.

I didn't know ...... And I used to inspect fuel stations for their licencing applications. There was certainly nothing in the regs about that 20 years ago
. Perhaps it's a bit like fueling your motorbike whilst sat on it. Not your best idea, but not illegal as far as I know.

Won't help the chap in question but how do you get on if you want to check your oil, I guess you fill up first the deed has then been done

The days have long gone when the cars were fueled by an attendant who said "and can I check your oil sir".

I had a problem with my lightweight as the filler is under the seat, told most places why the door had to be open and they were ok about it, one would still say no so i removed the door and put by his till, let me fill up then. Common sense isn't very common.

I used to have fun with my LR Series 1 where the fuel filler is under the drivers seat. You have to have the door open - if you had a door on it - and take out the seat cushion to expose the very large diameter fuel tank cap. So in the old days I would ask the attenant to fill her up and have a good giggle while he was wandering around the vehicle, pump hose in hand looking for the filler cap!

I used to run a filling station group yonks ago and we had a policy of requiring the engine to be off while fuelling. Don't recall if it was regulations or just something we did. I did have to sack a staff member for persistently smoking on the forecourt. That was against regulations.

Slightly off topic; I used to have a girl friend with long hair. She had a Honda 50 moped and one night she decided to check how much petrol she had so she lit a match to try to get some light in the tank. She had short hair after that!

I was in a filling station recently holding the nozzle whilst waiting for the pump to zero and the attendant boomed out something incomprehensible over the tannoy. Then he came out and said that he wasn't allowed to activate the pump unless the nozzle was actually poking into the car's filler cap. Never heard that one before.  3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

There are at least two unattended pay-at-pump only filling stations near me.
I wonder if someone is watching, remotely, customers live or is there a camera simply recording so as to look back at if there is a problem. Jules

I did the same with mine, only I leaned it against the front bumper. Got a few strange looks from others at the pumps , I can tell you. But it started a conversation with a guy who pulled up in a Rally car.

Refusing to enable the pump if bits are lifted could be interesting, my other "car" is a Honda NC750x motorbike.
Where the fuel tank is traditionally is a storage compartment that can be used to store your crash helmet, and the fuel filler is under the passenger seat. So the seat has to be lifted to put the fuel in. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

I’ve seen another video on this today some people with an old Beetle tried 3 BP station stations and even told the third one what they were doing and common sense prevailed.
