Potential purchase - Issues if doing low miles??

Morning

Looking to change up cars and the freelander 2 peaked my interest (following JayEmm on cars review). But as I currently do less than 5000 miles a yr (local commute and fortnight trip away) is the freelander ruled out due to its diesel engine? i.e. filter clogging and other issues with diesel vehicles not used for long trips.
Would be interested to know if others are using theirs on a limited mileage basis and incurring any issues before I consider this further.

If you buy a Freeby that's early, then it's unlikely to have a DPF. The DPF became started after 2011 ish. DPF equipped diesels are more fussy about their use, needing a good trip every now and then to allow a regeneration to take place. Just for reference, we've had several DPF equipped diesels, the wife drives one daily (not a Freelander) but we've never had a DPF related issue, dispite the average daily trip being just a few miles. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I'm currently doing around 3000 mile per year,
no DPF but higher road tax,
I'm aware diesels don't do well with short trips. so
I use the motor accordingly,
I'm afraid not a lot of choice when it comes to the Freelander . DAVE.

Ideally i would always want to go newer which probably means having the DPF which means taking the risk of potential clogging although i have seen one which is 2010 which looks decent.

Does sooner than usual oil changes reduce the occurrence?

Out of interest you say the non filter ones have a higher tax. Looking on autotrader I got the impression they are all £320 a yr? Is this not the case then?

No, more frequent oil changes have no effect on dpf’s blocking.
If a dpf can clear itself passively by just getting to a strike temperature where the catalyst in the dpf is hot enough to burn off the particulate all is well.
However, if the dpf doesn’t get hot enough passively then diesel is fed into the cylinders on the exhaust stroke to instigate an active burn off of the particulate. The problem is that fuel bypasses the cylinder rings and gets into the oil, leading to oil dilution that is mitigated by more frequent oil changes.
If you do do longer runs frequently, water and volatiles in the oil can be boiled off but a car that only ever does short journeys will benefit from more frequent oil changes as well.

As suggested above, a DPF equipped car will benefit from more frequent oil changes, but those won't effect the DPF. A good run every couple of hundred miles will help keep it clean. I can tell when the wife's Audi is regenerating the DPF, as the exhaust note changes, it gets deeper and more pronounced for about 20 minutes, before returning to normal.

My RFL is now over £380 pa, which is up about £60 since buying it 4 years ago. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I have a TD4 late 2013 road tax is a lot cheaper than an Auto SD4 and better on fuel I find the TD4 powerful enough for my needs. Never had any DPF issues with it, now retired and not using it much I put a bottle of DPF cleaner in it on a long run always passes the MOT. 2013 FL2 XS.

Ours is an 09 and £395 a year. We only do 5 to 6 thousand a year and had no problem.

As always my advice is by the newest, best equipped SD4 that you can find.

If you are worried (unnecessarily in my opinion) about the DPF, then just treat yourself(selves) to a nice drive down a reasonably quick road now and again. That will give you time to experience what the FL2 does best, get you from A to B in a quick, comfortable, and safe way.

I have had 12 years of SD4 PDF Fl2s with no hint of clogging.

GET A GOOD ONE and ENJOY the MINI RANGE ROVER EXPERIENCE. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

My own experience with our DPF equipped 2013 HSE is there have been no issues whatsoever. We do very low miles, car will be 11 years old in March and has just gone over 60k miles and 7 years in our ownership, at least 80% or more of its journeys are short local trips in Mr Khans 20mph zones. on average it gets a fortnightly 25 mile round trip which involves using the A3 at an average 50mph when we visit our Son. It also get a proper work out once or twice a year towing a 1.5 ton caravan. If you find a decent well looked after car that has had the oil changes using the correct grade of oil I would be surprised if you had any issues. If the MOT inspection states:

Note ; Engine / bay covers , under guards & mouldings fitted , restricting views

does this indicate the vehicle might have been used for green laning ??

No not at all, these are all fitted as standard its the MOT testers covering their Censored .
Its easy to see if any vehicle has been off roaded by checking underneath for mud, dirt, underside damage, Etc or any additional accessories fitted such as fuel tank and diff guards,
Also check the subframes for rust particularly the rear one. 2013 FL2 XS.
