Jammed tailgate Freelander 2

I have a 12 plate Freelander 2 and my dogs lead has got trapped in the tailgate and the tailgate is firmly closed. I can’t lock the vehicle and I can’t pull the trapped lead out even though I’ve cut the clip end off it and pulled. How will a garage be able to release it please

Have you tried pushing it from the inside quite hard ? I imagine the lead has got trapped on the lock mechanism maybe some brute force would open it ? Also have you tried the key fob and the dash button ?

Hi thank you …yes I’ve tried the key fob and the spare fob and also the unlock/lock button trick on the dash but to no avail. Il ask my husband and his brother if they can provide some brute force from the inside but it is very difficult as I have a very heavy Lintran dog cage in the back. If that doesn’t work do you know please how a garage would release it

Counterintuitively: I recommend that you put pressure on the hatch to close it tighter and at the same time have someone else unlock it with the FOB or the LOCK/UNLOCK on the dash.

Good Luck

Paul

This was my train of thought as well. concentrate the force applied directly over the latch location on the tail gate. It could be the moving part of the latch cant move because of the tension being applied at the moment due to the trapped lead.

Just a thought, at the very moment one presses the unlock button. Another person pushes open the boot with their feet/legs from the inside. Good timing is required & may be better to lower the rear seats for the best leverage & quick application to force open the boot at the precise moment. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Thank you…we did think of that ..I was just a bit worried that if we open it will it cause any damage to the fastening and we might not be able to close it? We park it in the drive…our garage too small…so it would be awful if we couldn’t close it…it’s due a service so I’m wondering whether to let the garage have a look as if a problem they can keep it under cover and fix any parts? Plus it’s awkward as we have this massive heavy dog cage in the back so it would need someone slim and agile to get in the back lol…we are both pensioners ….we will give it a go the best we can

Thank you all for your advice…

Can you reach the dog lead that’s inside the boot ? Would need 3 people but I’m thinking pulling the lead from inside then outside while someone tries the boot handle may work. What kind of lead is it leather nylon rope flat nylon ?

Took all your advice ….hubby got inside the back of the Freelander with great difficulty …pushed the centre point with his feet and hey presto it opened! RAC couldn’t advise us to do this and we travelled all the way from Blackpool…140 Miles with tailgate warning light on and haven’t been able to lock it.

Thanks to everyone for your time and your advice. I can go to Crufts now knowing that my dogs are safe in their cage in the boot. What a great forum. Thanks guys

Good to see he is still agile in the back of the car & 'hey presto "it" opened!' Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
