Driveway replacement with a LR

Our FL2 is our 4th Land rover whilst living in this house (16 years) the drive is tarmac which was laid back in 1979. We've never been to fussed about the little dribbles from the LRs because the drive was old. However a few months back we had a water leak under the drive so had to dig it up and run a new water main. Now the drive is ready for replacement.

My issue has now come that I don't want to put new tarmac down and have the FL2 dribble on it.

I will be fixing the current dribble in the coming months but I'm sure there will be another at some point, and even if not, the various maintenance often ends with a little oil escaping onto the drive.

Has anyone found a better surface to put down on the drive that can be cleaned easier than tarmac? Or that will hide the dribbles better?

The drive is 4 cars big currently (2 x 2) but we would be looking at wider at the top so that 3 cars can fit across the top and 2 at the bottom. The top half slopes down quite a bit, the bottom half is flat.

One benefit of block paving is that it’s easy to lift a section out and replace if it’s stained with oil. Not sure how good it would be on a slope, if the rain would get washed out of the joints or not.

Have a look on the Marshalls Building Products website at Porcelain Pavers . I’ve just done a lot of research on products as we’re doing a major renovation of our bungalow . We chose blocks for the drive as it’s big and I wanted permeable . We did pick porcelain for the patio area as it’s so tough and doesn’t stain . We put falls on it into Aco drains . With proper groundwork’s. , a full mortar bed and correct falls for drainage porcelain can take traffic and would meet your no staining requirements . Marshalls are great if you ring them they’ll advise on applications . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Years ago there was driveways with 2 strips of concrete for the wheels to run on and gravel between them for the oil to drip on. How times change.

Having recently seen the groundwork ( and costs ! ) that is necessary to make a good foundation for a drive ( any drive ) . I’d be curing the oil leaks first , then the drive , and the. buying a roll of Visqueen membrane to put a cars worth down to drive onto if I did oil changes on the drive . Wrap up dispose , keep your £ xxxx investment untarnished. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I have a block drive which when i had a D1 and D2 had oil markings on it.
Freelander is oil tight i am glad to say.
Tried all sorts to clean drive. Eventually out of desperation i tried my gas weed killer flame on the oil patches. Need to be patient but worked extremely well.
Have recently cleaned drive with ""BLOCKBLITZ" I purchased through Amazon and that has done a great job cleaning the blockwork.
Hope this helps. Jim A

I'm not sure about this but I think there are some newish regulations in place that require surface water to be able to drain through the material and into the ground below and not run off into the drainage sytem.

Something to do with flood preventing or some town hall dictator.

I think that you are being unnecessarily worried about oil drips from the FL2.

I have had 2 Freelanders over the last 11 years parked on my block pathed drive and have not noticed any oil contamination. The only change has been the gradual development of 4 slight hollows where I always park in the same position to clear the gates.

You can see on the right of the picture that I have incorporated a gravel area to allow rain to run off into garden.

Easy way to clean oil stain from a tarmac drive is, wet the drive buy the cheapest bio washing powder you can find, sprinkle it over the stains rub it in with an hard bristle yard brush, then jet wash it off, stain removes easy.

When doing oil changes put down those giant jigsaw rubber kids play mats.

You beat me to it Arcit.
I use non bio, spray water over the floor then sprinkle all over and scrub it in. Common sense isn't very common.

Concrete driveway, but while at it put in deformed reo, so if you get heavy trucks it won't crack.

Get the surface stamped with paver look & painted with contrast paver mortar look.

Another option, granite cobblestones are pretty durable & impervious.

Good points by others about run off & drainage.

Don't forget visually it needs to fit the house.

A mottled look with hide oil issues better than a simple plain visual appearance. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
