Picture requests. 17" wheels

Hi all. I've done some searches but not seen much pic evidence..
Times coming up for some new 17" tyres.
Fl2 is standard (ish)... No lift or anything anyway..
Been looking at options for 245 65 17... And 245 70 17. I believe both fit with no issue?

More for the looks and a bit of extra confidence should I ever take it ln the rough stuff a bit more. Not into serious greenlaning any more because my original freelander1 got far too expensive doing all that.

So what I'm after is... Pics of non lifted fl2s with either... Please... Slightly worried about the 70/17s looking too big without a lift...

2009 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Rimini Red

Be careful will taller tyres, as the speedometer will read low, which is an offence. Mine with new standard 235/65/17 tyres the speedometer is basically spot on. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Have you checked that? A lot of my driving is cruise control motorway speed at the moment.
GPS 70mph... Is actually 73mph on the speedo(according to my phone, GPS dashcam and the Android headunit in car) using the standard 235s. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I agree with the 2-3mph difference in recorded against GPS readings.
On my FL2 it seems to be a constant and not proportional to speed (as in the mechanical speedo days) and therefore I am not sure what a change of rolling diameter would give as an indication.

I was interested to read that there is a law specifying max and min readings for speedos although I cannot recall this ever being checked post-manufacture.

The law for car speedometers in the UK
The UK law is based on the EU standard, with some minor changes. A speedo must never show less than the actual speed, and must never show more than 110% of actual speed + 6.25mph.

So if your true speed is 40mph, your speedo could legally be reading up to 50.25mph but never less than 40mph. Or to put it another way, if your speedo is reading 50mph, you won’t be doing more than 50mph but it’s possible you might actually only be travelling at 40mph.

To ensure that they comply with the law and make sure that their speedometers are never showing less than true speed under any foreseeable circumstances, car manufacturers will normally deliberately calibrate their speedos to read ‘high’ by a certain amount. As your satnav is not the designated device by which a car’s speed is measured, it does not need to incorporate any fudge factoring.

You should be OK then.
Mine is more accurate than that. At 70 on various nav systems, my speedometer shows 71 MPH, so there isn't enough spare for me to fit larger tyres, even though they would fit. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Do you realise that you can edit the tyre size in the CCF?

Now whether that has any effect on speedo reading I don’t know, but might be worth trying for someone who has that capability.

2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Biscay Blue

Hi Pippy0 :waves: .

Our car has been on a bit of a journey when it comes to wheels and tyres so hopefully it'll go some way into helping with what you need even if it's not an exact answer.

This is our car when we pretty much got our hands on it with the standard Goodyear Wrangler 235/65/17's on it:

We bought a set of wheel and tyres' from Phil off of the Freelander 2 Off Road Group. So we moved from the road going tyre above to some fairly worn Yokohama Geolander All Terrain 235/65/17's.

Now moving more to the present day. This is the car with a lift kit. 30mm spacers and a brand spanking new set of Falken Wildpeak tyres. But we moved to 245/65/17.

I never like to give advice as I don't feel remotely qualified compared to most of the ladies and gents on this forum. But if I could it would be this. If you want to make the Freelander 2 look more pleasing on the eye when it comes to the wheel and tyre area, maybe contemplate putting a set of 30mm spacers on it. If you look at our car when it had the worn Geolanders on it, the wheel and tyres are tucked into the wheel arches. Obviously be very careful with the tyre/spacer combo as you wouldn't want to be pushing the tyres outside of the arches and failing the MOT.

As for tyre sizes in standard trim, my mind is hazy when it comes to this as it's been a while since I looked into all of it. But in standard Freelander 2 form I think you can pick either 235/65 or 245/65 tyres and get away without any rubbing. I think once you move to a 70 profile tyre your then in the remit of tyre rub on full lock without any spacers.

My recommendation would be to put 30mm wheel spacers on to push the wheel and tyres to the outer arches and put some 245/65/17 all terrain tyres on. Obviously the downsides are the cost of doing this and all terrains will be a decibel or 2 louder than road focused tyres. I'd be fascinated if anyone out there has 245/65/17 road tyres on their Freelander 2 and how they would look.

Looks good on the geolanders with the lift👍
I have 18" Disco Sport wheels on mine which obviously have a different off set to the standard 17"s as they sit out slightly further and give the car a more pleasing stance. Still running 235/65 profile. Have lost all my photos off my phone recently. Still have the 17"s in the garage, not sure what I'll do with them.
