UK MOT results - Suspension/Tyres

Hi All,

I would appreciate your thoughts on my recent UK MOT results.

2013MY eD4 72kmiles, normal road use only, 50/50 local/motorway driving.

Mileage since previous MOT approx. 6k miles at which point 4x new Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres were fitted.

Rear brake pads will be sorted shortly.

Concern is the tyre wear in 12months/6k miles - is this a likely result of the highlighted suspension pin/bush being worn?

I plan to get those pins/arms sorted asap, just wondering if something else needs looking at resulting in the tyre wear?

I know it is stating the obvious and no picture of actual tyre has been displayed, but shoulder wear evenly on both sides of a tyre is normally the symptom of chronic under-inflation.

Surely tracking issues (toe-in/toe out) should normally give inner OR outer edge wear, not both. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Thanks for the responses, tyres are 235/60R18 103H M+S, running at 32psi (2.2bar) - according to the fuel station gauge anyway.

Will take some pics of tyres tomorrow in the light and upload, I read it (and i appreciate its upside down) as the outer edges of both tyres was being scrubbed away not both edges of both tyres, unless i am being optimistic.

I suggest that you are right. The MOT tester has missed the "s" from "tyre". I am no expert but suspect tracking is to blame. Did you get the tracking done when you had the tyres replaced? It's yet another expense, but with the cost of tyres today, perhaps unwise not to.
I rebuilt a mx5 a few years ago, every bush nut and bolt on the suspension. The drive back from 4 wheel alignment was so different to the drive there.

I agree, if it is the outside edges of both tyres, get the loose suspension bushes sorted and tracking checked, and enjoy another 72k miles. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

This may be relevant;
WROTE THIS IN MAY '22

Had Continental's cross contact as per original spec fitted in 2016; did 39,400 on deliberately downsized 17" wheels, across the whole of Europe, alps, Pyrenees, etc. Fantastic tyre, secure, smooth, stable. Changed them in 2019 for Pirelli all season; what a disaster. Thought there was something seriously wrong with alignment or steering mech,, had it checked three times. Car wandered all over the place with every change of road surface, potholes, white lines etc. I could even tell the sex of a dead bird! They failed MOT after 23,000 and changed back to Contis in May. What a staggering difference; the car is immediately back to it's stable, secure positive self with no wandering issues. Speak as you find by Continentals are now my default tyre.

Thanks Guys,
Interesting reading on that swap to Continentals - will consider that nearer the replacement time.

I will get the worn suspension components sorted/tracking done then monitor from there.

I have attached a couple of (rainy) pics of UK front offside tyre, nearside is pretty much the mirror image ,
which may give a better perspective to what MOT tester was commenting on.

Looks like the tester needs his eyes checked! Nothing wrong with those tyres! They look to be wearing pretty evenly (without taking an actual tread depth measurement). Annoyingly you have an advisory against the car that shouldn`t be there! Big Cry

Daft question. Does the MOT centre do repairs? Just asking! I try to take my car to somewhere that doesn’t have a vested interest in failing vehicles or dishing out advisories. I just want an honest and unbiased test of how road worthy my car is, not to inflate anybody’s sales figures.

Those tyres look fine.
I think I can see the wear limit indicators (a bit blurred) in the bottom pic. Look Ok to me.

The Fl2 does tend to wear the outer edges of the front tyres quite a bit - depends upon driving style and frequency of corners/roundabouts . But yours look OK to me. Jules

Legal limit for cars is
"At least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band in the centre 3/4 of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre."

Most people regard 3mm as a safe limit though.

Quick tyre pressure calculation. Tyre pressure (my Pirelli AT)

Tyres specifications: 50psi max / max load 1120kg = 0.0446

x Freelander specs: max 1360kg / 2 (rear axle/per wheel) = 30.3psi / 29.2psi front.



Over winter are about 29 - 30psi when starting. They warm up about 2psi around the city, also basically nothing in the boot. In summer about 4psi higher if I don't actually adjust pressure.

Car states 32psi for 18 inch tyre, so close enough. Especially for a bigger tyre of 255/60r18.

Tyres will increase about 3psi once warmed up on a longer faster run. Another 1 to 2 psi if the sun is on that side of the car for an hour. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Power steering wear can cause outer edges to wear/feather. Years ago, the car had to be moving to make it easy to turn the wheel when parking for example. Nowdays, people turn the wheel on full lock while stationary and then move the car, scrubbing the outsides. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

& even then with steering wheel "twice" the diameter & 4.5 turns lock to lock it was still hard work.

None of us have arm muscles any more.

I still move the car while turning the steering wheel. Probably out of habit. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
