Wipers occasionally stop working mid sweep.

Hi gents,

I’m having a potentially dangerous intermittent issue I’m hoping someone can help me with.. occasionally both auto and constant setting my wipers will just stop working mid sweep, no judder or strain, they just freeze where they are, I then have to knock them onto high speed which seems to be working fine.

I’ve replaced the wiper stalk today, as an experiment I turned on the wipers and unplugged the stalk unit from its dock mid stroke, interestingly the wipers still returned to a parked position, this leads me to believe that when people have this particular issue it’s not to do with a bad connection in the wiper stalk.

Ruling out the wiper stalk unit, what might be the next logical step?

Any and all feedback gratefully received as always!

The wipers are controlled by the CJB, which powers the wipers based on signals from the stalk. Stopping mid wipe is likely to be the wiper motor but not always, but that's what I'd be blaming.
I'd be tempted to run a diagnostic on the CJB, and see what comes up. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Over the years I've had wiper issues with a variety of old cars - it was always the motor, bushes or something within the motor casing.

But as Nodge indicated modern car electronics can be a minefield - I'd start by looking at the motor though. Jules

Thanks for all the helpful input guys, the thread that Bossbob posted the link for looks to cover my exact set of symptoms so I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow!

It’s gonna be tricky one, the issue only seems to occur after they’ve been operating for a while so not easy to replicate on the driveway on a dry day, that link gives me plenty to be getting on with though. Smile

Running a diagnostic is a good call Nodge, one of my colleagues has diagnostic gear that works with my car so I’ll plug in when I can and see what it’s saying.

Thanks again!

I had a similar problem in a Citroen a few years ago. I was on the M1 in lane three in heavy traffic with all three lanes full and moving at 70 mph in heavy rain and the wipers stopped completely and I could see nothing through the windscreen an just a very limited view through the door windows. Barging my way to the hard sholder was a bit hairy and caused a fair bit of tooting from other drivers who of course did not know of my problem.

Turned out to be the three screws holding the wiper motor to the scuttle had come loose allowing the motor to move just enough so that the wiper mechnism fouled on something which stopped it moving.

Talking of wipers , my drivers side one hits the top of the a pillar when used at speed yet the parked position doesnt look too high up the screen, there is also a minor rubbing noise on occasions. Am i looking at the park position being wrong, play in the wiper arm or the wiper rack itself? Nothing seems unduly loose.

Those symptoms point to play in the linkage, which can develop into a situation where the linkage fall apart, stopping one or both wipers from sleeping the screen. It's easy to check the condition of the linkage though. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Do the wipers seem slower in operation than normal?
Had this with my son's VW Polo, they would slow then occasionally stop. Turns out one of the wiper spindles was virtually seized. Took it out, dismantled the spindles from the rack, cleaned and then greased them before reassembling, all good again. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I had the OP's symptoms when my FL2 was about 2 years' old.
Had it fixed under warranty by the main dealer - They told me it needed a new wiper motor. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

Sorted the issue so thought It’d be proper to add the solution to the thread.. I swapped the wiper relays with the headlight washer relays and haven't had any problems since.

So yeah, at least one of the relays had had it. I’ll pick up a couple of those relays to replace the headlight washers when I remember.
