Exhaust Manifold Leaking - Cabin Fumes

Hi all, for a while now we've been getting a diesel fume smell in the cabin coming in through the vents on our 2014 td4. I'm near certain it's coming from the exhaust manifold as if you stop the car during a dpf regen cycle there is a massive amount of smoke visible from the back of the engine block against the bulkhead.

It had been leaking a bit for a while and then it got worse after the dpf was removed and refitted which I assume disturbed it.

Question is, I believe access to the manifold is tricky? I was told by a local specialist that it's an engine out job to get it off and re-seal it all properly which I don't really believe... looking online it appears you can gain better access from the top by removing a panel that sits behind the block against the bulkhead (some kind of firewall?). Has anyone got any experience of an exhaust manifold off and swap job? Trying to gauge difficulty, time and what it should cost etc...

Can’t comment on access to the manifold but if fumes are getting into the cabin, check the battery cover and more importantly the seal around it as that can allow engine fumes to be drawn into heater box.

I would also check the turbo hose possibly for leaks ? ? 2013 FL2 XS.

I'd checked the airbox and it's all clipped in and sealed. It's definitely leaking fumes from the back of the engine. Turbo hose I don't believe is in this area? Isn't it all rigid pipes at the back?

The only unsealed hole into the cabin is the cabin vent. If that is closed (recirculating air) then there shouldn't be really any air from the engine bay leaking into the cabin.

There are in some respects 2 firewalls. Air will leak through the various joins of the forward firewall. Parts are not hermetically sealed. But the vent when closed is pretty good at sealing (rear firewall) you can see it behind the battery a bit to the centre of the car.

It doesn't actually solve the problem, but it might narrow down another air leak into the cabin.

The way the space is designed between the 2 firewalls is to circulate air to remove dust before it even gets to the cabin filter. Also air circulation around the battery to keep it cool. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Sorry I should have said this only happens with the fans blowing and not on re-circ. If you turn the fans off there isn't really an issue.

Just posted this on another thread with a guy having smoke coming in through vents -

"have you taken the engine cover off and checked you're not leaking diesel onto the top of the manifold? That cooks off and gets sucked into the car easily, most noticeable when stopped."

The exhaust manifold is definitely not an engine out job, and anyone who says it is should be avoided.

However I doubt the exhaust manifold is leaking, as you'd hear it making a dreadful noise from the engine bay. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Not always. I've seen a few turbo flanges shear off the manifold, and it sounded completely normal

I’ve had this very job done recently.
The engine stayed in, but some of the mounts needed undoing to be able to twist the engine around its east - west axis to gaing proper access.
I had sheared bolts too; fortunately the head didn’t need removing for access.
£900-£1,000 inc VAT labour and new manifold.
Make sure the turbo actuator has a full range of movement before reassembly.

Just what Mikey said - it does stink when your stationary, the engine’s running, the fan is blowing & it’s not on air reciculation though!

Have you found out what this is? I suspect I have the exact same issue. EGR replacement seems to have disturbed the exhaust manifold gasket.

Any idea on costs to repair?
