Gen 4 Haldex service

About to do a Haldex service on my 2012 Freelander 2, it's got the large flange on the diff, do I remove the prop or can I just drop the front of the diff down to get prop off? also do I remove 40ml or 70ml of oil when re filling Haldex?

The large damper flange is on the Haldex, so the propshaft comes off as normal, dropping the front of the assembly help here. The damper flange does get in the way when removing the pump, so it needs removing from the Haldex input shaft.

As for filling, I just fill to the bottom of the fill plug and leave it there. Removing 70ml of fluid lowers the fluid level by 8 to 10mm, which I can't see as being an issue. I've not had any excess fluid spill out the breather, so I'm guessing the level doesn't need to be millimetre perfect. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Did Haldex sevice yesterday on my back with it on ramps, not a bad job worst part is getting prop off, like Nodge says drop front of diff down and it comes out no need to take prop off completely, I cut the damper off the flange too while it was off, the rubber was perished and breaking up anyway, had to make a puller out of a bit of flat bar to get flange off.

When I was at Bell's they changed the massive damper for the smaller one. They said its makes no discernible difference apart from making future servicing easier. And they have made a "special" tool specifically to remove these unhelpful dampers. Jules

Having tried and failed miserably to remove the pump and filter on my 2014 SD4 I would appreciate some advice. It was possible to remove the outer filter cap but not the inner plastic piece sealing the filter. Any ideas?
I did try heating a pick, possibly not strong enough, without success and even tried using a small drill bit which didn't penetrate at all given the small amount of space to put any pressure on it at all. Tried a small self tapper and wood screw but again it was impossible to put any pressure on it but doesn't appear to have made any hole so shouldn't be any leaks...

Has anyone had similar problems with a result?

I may have to leave it in with a local specialist to have the prop removed in order to have the pump serviced and filter changed.

One trick is to use a cable tie to make a loop through the protruding end of the white plastic cover and then use a tool to pull it out. Jules

I'm sure there is a video on here how to remove the Haldex Gen 4 pump and filter, and they grind a little bit off the pump so it will in future come off easy without dropping or removing the prop.

It depends on the damper size - there are several sizes - maybe three . But there is one where grinding the motor body allows removal of the pump, and the later, massive one where you have no chance of getting the pump out without removing the damper. Jules

Mine’s the latter so there’s no chance unless the damper comes off 😩 Haven’t yet come across the know how of how to get it off and don’t want to challenge my limited diy mechanic skills either… yet…

The damper comes off quite easily once you undo the central nut.
The problem is holding the damper from rotating. I made a simple bar tool to bolt onto where the propshaft bolts go, so as to hold the splined shaft still whilst undoing the nut.

Similar to the tool on page 350 in the JLR manual but I had to mount it to the back of the damper not the front as shown on page 351. Jules
