Automatic transmission

Can any one tell me the number for a parking pawl I have a freelander 2 the pawl is located once the transverse case is removed I am trying to stop my vehicle from jerking forward

Sorry everyone I am new to this Forum, I didn’t make myself clear enough, I have a Freelander2 with a problem of jolting forward, I am looking for the part number for the part called a Parking Pawl , Can anyone help.

England 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black

The gearbox is an Aisin AW TF-80 SC

You won't get any parts from JLR for the gearbox - they see it as "sealed for life" and any faults within warranty are a straight swap back to Aisin for a new box. The box was used in Freelander 2, Evoque, various Volvos, Ford, BMW, Fiat/Chrysler, Toyota..... it's a long list!

Best bet would be to talk to a transmission specialist - there's a handy exploded view of the box here that may help you in highlighting the part.

The OP doesnt say how old his car is but FWIW they made some changes to the autoboxes of 2011 cars.

"Revised transmissions boost efficiency

I took it that the OP was allowing the parking pawl to take the strain when stopping.
I find that under these conditions the FL2 does jerk when you reselect the transmission.
Applying the parking brake before releasing the foot brake should overcome this.

While stationary I just hold the car on the footbrake, and allow the 'false neutral' to do it's thing.

I gave up trying to artificially control the autobox a long time ago, after discovering it quickly adapted to overcome my instructions. (say like slightly lifting to change up - as in the good old days) FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Parking pawl is only for parking, in order to "lock" the gearbox.
Now...
About jolting forward, like others have said above:
1.
If the jolt is when you take the box from "Park" to "Drive", first time during the day when you start the car, then this can be because of a car parked on a slight slope.
When the parking pawl "escapes" from the toothed wheel it has engaged, that jolt is felt.
Solution: Engage handbrake, release the service/foot brake and if the car is not moving, engage box's "Park". The procedure is in fact the recommended one in the handbook.
2.
If the jolt is during drive, in traffic, when you release foot brake and press gas pedal, then this a problem with the box's design and is solved (LR thinks...) by a software update for the box.

If you are just looking for that part, I don't believe that you'll find it as a replacement part.

Many people with automatics never use the handbrake (cable or electric) and wonder why they seize up and the parking pawl gets damaged.
I, for one, have always engaged the handbrake. The EPB makes for a quick set off at the traffic lights (if required); leave it in D and just go when ready. Jules

Back in the late 70's I worked for Borg Warner at their R&D department. One of the jobs I had to do was put the car in park at speeds of about 25 mph endless times. The reason?, to test the durability of the parking pawl if someone accidently put it in park whilst driving.
Park wont engage unless the car is stationary, instead the pawl is designed to rub over the drum until finally engaging as the car stops.
Im too scared to try it on my car these days, in case I Censored it up.

Hi Everyone. Want to thank everyone who supplied information I was looking for regarding my 2011 Freelander SD4 HSE, while looking through this forum I came up with a plan to test the parking pawl , I drove to a hill area I put on my hand brake selected park switched of engine released foot brake then decided to release hand brake , and then the parking pawl slipped in, so decided to drive of and found that coming out of park was quite stiff so I am pleased to have joined this forum.
