FLAKING BLACK EXHAUST PAINT

Sad

Hi

I'm new to this so please excuse any mistakes. The reason I've joined the forum is that I seem to have an "unusual" problem. Bought my new Freelander 2 in March - great car. However last week I noticed large amounts of black exhaust paint had flaked off. Took into dealer who said it was very unusual. Apparently LR have only recently started coating the exhaust + box etc in black "heatproof" paint for cosmetic reasons - looks better especially on a black car. Dealer took it in last Monday and apparently re-coated it 4 x with the black heatproof paint from LR. Okay for 1 week but now paint flaking off again. Dealer now unsure what to do and awaiting response from LR. Have googled this and most problems seem related to motorbikes. Anybody had this problem and anybody know of a solution????
Thanks kooledude

Welcome to the forum and bringing along a totally new fault Thumbs Up

A while ago it was noted that the back box, situated just behind the rear bumper was discolouring with what looked like heat exposure on a petrol FL2( see Pic below)

I have not heard of LR bringing in this painted coating on the exhaust, maybe some of the newer owners could look at their cars to see whats what.

If you could post up a picture of the flaking paint it would be great Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Hi

Thanks for all your prompt replies.
I will post a pic ASAP.
This thermo-protective black coating as well as being cosmetic also apparently has been painted on to protect against corrosion, this also has only been done on models from 2007 onwards (so LR say).
Yes a little bit of flaking paint would not bother me either but this was a large area which subsequently showed up the underlying silver exhaust, and when viewing the car from the back it looked awfull - even the dealer commented how bad the effect was. Obviously the area of flaking since the re-coating is not as large yet but it's getting there.
Dealer is still awaiting response from LR. kooledude

i wonder if you can get domestic radiator paint in black?

Another option would be to spray your FL2 silver and then the exhaust will match the rest of the car Whistle

Okay - just a quick update, dealer has emailed me today and stated they will be re-coating the exhaust again with a different paint finish. Don't yet know what the difference is but when I do I will post this ( just awaiting dealer to inform me how this "new" paint finish differs).

Cool

Just got email from dealer who says new paint has better adhesion and coverage ( still black Laughing )

Also I enquired if a clear - coat could be put over it but apparently this is not heat-proof so would not work.

Will let you know how I get on (paint not in till next week). kooledude

Cool

Just an update, finally paint arrived today and rear exhaust section has been coated with this new paint which apparently has "better adhesion and coverage". I guess time will tell. kooledude

Never known paint adhere to exhaust systems with much sucess, they are usually produced from a zintec type of mild steel or varying grades of stainless steel to resist the corrosion, mainly from the inside. Neither material a whow for paint adhesion. Secondly the system is subject to a tremendous of heat, another resounding whow for paint finishes.
Given that exhaust systems corrode from the inside, you just do not want to know what acids and various nasties are in there then the paint is certainly only going to be cosmetic. still pining for my 3dr, no removeable hardtop, no drop glass tailgate, no roof rack, no pockets everywhere to stow all that man kit
