My understanding is that the high pressure fuel pump does both lift and high pressure to the rail. That is why it is so important to bleed the air out of the system from the tank, through the filter, to the fuel pump and back to the filter when changing the fuel filter.

Yes I've heard that, but reading the manual is interesting. The lift pump is integral to the injector pump. It seems to be a separate "component" but isn't separable. How and why? Why does the oil filter have to located where it is? Because Land Rover. MY11 SD4 SE Auto |

The oil filter is where it is because the DW12 engine was a Peugeot/PSA design and used by Ford when they owned Landrover. Still a very awkward place though. Jules |

I think of the injector pump as a two stage device - low pressure suck and high pressure push Jules |

The lift pump is an internal part of the HP pump, not too different to sequential mechanical diesel pumps of old. The only difference with these pumps, is the single output to a fuel rail, so electronic injectors can be used. As said above, the oil filter location is where it is because the engine wasn't really designed for this vehicle. On a Peugeot, Citroën or Ford it's easier to access but in the Freelander 2, the extra height of the slam panel and stronger lower cross member makes access more challenging.
