United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black

appreciate this is an old topic/thread

I have had since ownership [+2years] an occasional - say every 20 starts the charging system error. If you stopped the car and restarted it would go off and be happy for the next few trips.

It started doing it more and more and then yesterday would not clear and stranded my wife on the A14!

I checked the wire which looks to have been replaced as it is Red coming out of the Alternator - then in a professional crimped to a blue/grey all the way into the scuttle where it is again spliced to a Red into the ECU??
There is continuity and the crimps seem ok.

I am resigned to a new alternator - but the thought of £250-£300 spent and it does not fix it...?

No DTC's that my reader could see but the error is now all the time and is not intermittent....

Any other thoughts?

If the battery warning light is accompanied with no throttle response, it could be time to do a software update.

Alex thank you, the throttle was knackered but it was lit up like a Christmas tree… as it was dying on battery only. Lost gears, all sorts. Wouldn’t even lock.

New Battery (which was needed in any case as was getting a little tired) and it did 25 miles home, with just the charging system error on the dash.

It also seems our modern world means that I cannot buy a rectifier for it seems…which is the likely cause…

Took alternator off today and the regulator connector on the alternator was broken - not sure how but I suspect the wire is broken in the plastic.

So I put on a new alternator from EuroCarParts as there was a good discount...yes I could have bought a reg for £50 but the front pulley was a little lumpy, and the thing was dirty from an power steering leak off the top hose.

[another reason was parts availibilty - wife wanted car back - there is a lot to remove to get the alternator, and this one had doene 95k miles]

so new alternator - voltage as expected, no warning messages.... happy

I do now need to fix the top psteering hose leak though - LR001099 but confused as to how it separates...

I had the broken LIN bus blue wire issue causing the battery charge light to come on after 30 odd seconds or so.
156,000 miles. It looked ok, with a slight crack, but a good pull, and it broke away.

Alternator looked ok (Bosch) - producing 13.8v DC and 40mV AC with the broken wire.

Fixed the wire and now 14.4v so it looks like the alternator drops to a fail safe lower voltage for charging when the LIN bus is disconnected.

Thanks to all those that posted the original issue.
