Hi Alex. Not seen you around on here for a while. Hope all is well.

I was looking a some Volvo Utube videos today about Aisin gearbox ATF changes (not the AWF21 though) and they all use a plug-in device to reset the oil degradation counter.

How necessary is that on our F21 boxes and is there a work around for owners without the OBD2 hardware ?

I did do a bit of a search - honest Laughing Jules

All is well, God's allowing. Thanks for asking/thinking about it!

Oil degradation counter reset is not necessary to be performed, if no equipment is available.
That counter is there to tell you when the oil needs to be changed based on the box's exploitation conditions.
The things are like this, according to manufacturer:

The gearbox is filled for live, but TCM decides for an irregular oil service. This is evaluated by a point system, based on the box's temperature.
The measurement is performed every 50msec and the corresponding points are added until the "change oil" limit, which is 2.764.800.000 points.
Temperatures in celsius and corresponding points below:
100 - 110°C: 2 points
110 - 120°C: 6 points
120 - 130°C: 12 points
130 - 140°C: 24 points
140 - 150°C: 50 points
> 150°C: 100 points

So, in our exploitation conditions, you rarely see temperatures over 100 - 110°C and therefore that counter is never reached during the time we keep the car.
For a regular use, where the temperature doesn't go beyond 110°C - for example mine stays at about 80-90°C all the time - it means about 800 days of continuous 24/7 running.
Over 2 years of engine/box continuous, non-stop, functioning !!!
For the average driver, this means over 30-40 years of car life.

Also there is a torque limitation that depends on ATF-temperature.
If fluid temperature exceeds 135°C for more than 10 minutes, torque is limited to 200 Nm.
It returns to normal condition if ATF temperature has reached and stays below 120°C for 3 minutes.

That's great thanks.
My autobox doesn't get stressed and I changed the ATF at 40K miles anyway. Jules
