Sorry if I offended anybody Just that such things are pretty normal on rubber window surrounds and it never occurred to me that anybody would get so excited about a little discolouration

I could also have started a thread on the discolouration of my exhaust pipe, but I doubt if anybody would be very interested in that – I mean who lies on their back to polish the chromed exhaust pipe to make it look new and shining again  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

I would use a extra fine wire wool on your exhaust pipe, mixed with a little metal polish

Then you could always use a dremell and the polishing pad to buff it back up  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

i have 3M stainless steel cleaner for my kitchen, works really well, never thought about using on my car though

Sorry to be a nerd Andy but there are two sorts of "stainless steel". One is the true "stainless steel" which is a anti magnetic material containg no iron at all. The other is in effect a "stainless iron" which does rust as there is a ferritic material within the compound. Because of the more malleable qualities of the stainless iron hese are often used for the production of tubing and formig materials as they do not work harden during the forming process. I suggest that the cheaper exhaust embellishers are made from stainless iron rather than the more expensive and less malleable OEM product. That said there is considerable acidity in the exhaust gasses emitted from the vehicles which will lead to a high incidence of "staining" even on the best of the embellishers and these must be regularly cleaned in order to maintain their purity. On the other hand Chromium does not rust at all, it is the base metal, usually a mild or medium carbon steel, which is penetrated by the acid in the created atmosphere which rusts the base material and lifts the chromium plating off the sub structure.
Overall there is no long term point in putting an embellisher on the exhaust pipe of a internal combustion engine as the aciditic effluent will inevitably attack the material, unless of course the stainless steel is of the high chromium low ferrous variety. Ralph
