2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Lago Grey

Hello all - first post. Sorry to wake up an old thread but there is so much useful stuff on here I thought it might be worth it. I have 2010 TD4 HSE. Just took off the haldex 4, clean d and changed the fluid (used Ravenol). The question I was left with is about the large sealing ring between the haldex and rear diff. The one that came with my kit was a round section o-ring. The one I took off was a square section rubber gasket. I stuck with the old one as I don’t believe a o-ring works without a recess. Is this familiar to anyone? Has anyone found a new square section seal? Next time I will definitely want to put a new one in. Thanks.

Never seen a square section seal fitted there, always an o-ring p/no. LR002888. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

2015 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Orkney Grey

The original one that I took off was a square profile and the replacement was round. I did check the thickness at the time and the replacement was slightly larger across the cross-section.
The replacement has been in a year with no issues and I think I'm right in saying that it's not under any real fluid pressure?

An O ring doesn't need to be in a groove to work, it just needs some space to prevent it from being crushed flat. It's correct to use an O ring in this installation, as the diff front face is rebated to accept the O ring without crushing it flat. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Thanks all. I hope I don’t regret using the old one - fingers crossed. It looked and felt in reasonable shape. This pic shows a Volvo one with the same kind of seal.

Also how would you measure the 5mm difference when topping up - seems bonkers - hence the advised removal of fluid after topped up to the filler level. Jules

@jules,

Just my 2 cents CDN but since this haldex design (at least my year class) starves the main bearing for lubrication, I would always fill to the level mark and change the oil/filter annually. Of course, it's 2 cents CDN Wink so..

EDIT, Disregard this POST!, I'm confusing the haldex with the rear diff! Laughing

Can't see the world ending if you have 5mm or whatever ml too much oil in the haldex. I fill mine until its dribbling out of the filler hole and put the plug back in. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

If memory serves you fill it up run the pump to get the fluid moving then top up again then remove I think it's 70ml or am I wrong

That's what the manual says.
I just fill mine until the fluid spills back out, then running the pump seems to drop the level to a few mm below the filler hole, as the galleries fill. Not had an issue yet. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I have mentioned this before - of the hundred of thousands of FL2 built how many have had their Haldex serviced? Outwith Bell and a couple of other garages it is difficult to find anyone who does it. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Baltic Blue

Haldex units are used by other car manufacturers. Their mechanics are used to fluid and filter changes so there is no reason why they couldn’t do the same for our Haldex units. Regular fluid and filter changes will reduce the need for the strip down that happens because LR tell us that the Haldex is “sealed for life”!😡
