Hi All.
I have decided to get my Auto gearbox oil changed, I have phoned around and getting some silly prices thrown at me like £300 plus vat. a lot of garages will not do it, first of all, is it imperative that the auto gearbox is flushed as I am told its a special machine that flushes and drains. or can the gearbox just be drained and then refilled. I am ok at most of my mechanics but have never done an auto gearbox.

Easy to DIY with the modified Gibbons Method.

It's modified because the lower pipe on the Autobox connection is taken off as opposed to the connection at the Auto Fluid Cooler.

It requires two people, about 12 to 15 litres of fluid and a gentle hand when replacing the lower pipe connection also be sure to use the correct fluid for the MY

If your after getting the gearbox flushed I could recommend JAS Land Rover in Everingham. (Not too far away from you)

You can also do it with the sequential drain and refill method if you are on your own.
Generally only about 3L of the total 7L drains out each time (most remains in the torque convertor I believe) so you replace the amount drained (3L-ish) and run it for a bit and repeat.
After 4 exchanges you will have replaced about 90% of the old ATF and 95% after 5 exchanges (using 15L of new ATF).

Obviously you more you can get out each time the more old ATF will be replaced.

This doesnt seem to use much more new ATF then the flushing method . Jules

I did sequential drain & fill to avoid having to disconnect stuff. I used about 18qts and got a good improvement in fluid color but next time I'll get 22 qts... I think that would get it almost like-new color.

Got mine done at 130k by a local gearbox specialist. Cost was £200. Interesting that the mechanic said the oil he took out was really clean. Not what he expected at all.

Yes mine came in US qts, 946ml.

A UK quart is equivalent to 1.2 US quarts or 1136ml Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
