Driving in the USA

Going to Vegas in September and SWMBO hasn't been before. £79 each to book a coach trip from Vegas to the Grand Canyon. It's a 4.5 hour drive.

I can hire a car for about £130 and we can go at our own pace. Fuel is cheaper out there too.

Has anyone driven out there and would recommend it or advise against it? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Yes, I hired a car and drove from Vegas to Grand Canyon. Went to the North rim to a place called Kanab, although we stayed overnight and drove back to Vegas next day as its a long way to do in one day, although just be aware (don't know if its changed) unleaded petrol pump nozzle's are black and diesel are green. Bit worrying when filling up

I’ve done it 2 or 3 times . The biggest issue I’ve had was finding the hire car . The casino/ hotel car parks are on a scale that is unbelievable . If you are staying on the strip as you leave the parking you are on multi lane roads that take no prisoners , once out of town it’s a doddle . One thing to check is the parking costs you’ll encounter on stops on your trip , and the costs for how you’ll actually get to the canyon rim viewing points as these will be add on costs that a bus trip might cover . We drove to the Hoover Dam , the Canyon , the airport at the canyon for a light aircraft flight , Red Rock Canyon which was surreal , arrived in shorts and drove up to snow ( November ) and up to Area 51 . For what it’s worth I found a convertible to be a sound choice for the 360 traffic viewing driving on the multi lanes in town . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
